Dude, normal non-smartphones have cameras too!! Theyre just way less expensive cus they dont have big'ole touchscreens and are not full little computers running Android.
In fact I *definitely* wouldnt recommend Android as OS for ure protest phone. Android = Google. Google are part of PRISM and are notorious for harvesting personal data.

The whole idea of a burner phone is to buy it cash, pay cash for a data plan and use all fake credentials to register it. This should be enough to keep the riot police from accessing your personal info. This basic level is so your real smart phone with all its contacts, passwords and emails can’t be searched.

If you’re worried about federal government level spying you need to be a lot more paranoid about gps functions and where you register the phone and where you have the phone powered on. I don’t think the local cops trying to intimidate and troll for priors will have easy access to that kind of spying without breaking a bunch of laws.

Also I guess the power, importance and availability of burner phones today isn't exactly surprising but different than what I would have expected 20 years ago. Hell, nobody I knew brought any kind of phone to protests back then, most of us didn't even have cell phones.

So I'd be surprised about how fast the cyberpunk dystopia had advanced and how bland it is in real life.

I remember seeing some cave paintings in a museum that showed a time when one could buy a camera that is not a part of a cellphone. Such savage times those must have been.

I wasn't making the case that one couldn't record with a camera that wasn't part of a phone, but saying leave a phone at home doesn't particularly respond to this need: To document/record video that is streamed live and or saved to the cloud. Presumably people like recording with a phone because it helps prevent video being destroyed or confiscated during the protest. The phone allows the video to be immediately broadcast and backed up. Any internet enabled camera that is not a phone will have to rely on wireless hot spots, which aren't guaranteed to be available at a protest and if they are available their security isn't assured.
