I had hoped I would see some change in my lifetime, still wondering if it will stick though.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-06-18

What is actually changing in US?

Also, why are they telling people to buy $100 smartphone??? You can buy a Nokia 105 non-smartphone for $20 *new* and you can probably find countless ones for free.

casualcollapse - 2020-06-19

Because if you can't record video then what the fuck are you doing...😂😂😂

casualcollapse - 2020-06-22

Still waiting for your response purple cat

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-06-23

Dude, normal non-smartphones have cameras too!! Theyre just way less expensive cus they dont have big'ole touchscreens and are not full little computers running Android.
In fact I *definitely* wouldnt recommend Android as OS for ure protest phone. Android = Google. Google are part of PRISM and are notorious for harvesting personal data.

The whole idea of a burner phone is to buy it cash, pay cash for a data plan and use all fake credentials to register it. This should be enough to keep the riot police from accessing your personal info. This basic level is so your real smart phone with all its contacts, passwords and emails can’t be searched.

If you’re worried about federal government level spying you need to be a lot more paranoid about gps functions and where you register the phone and where you have the phone powered on. I don’t think the local cops trying to intimidate and troll for priors will have easy access to that kind of spying without breaking a bunch of laws.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-06-23

Yeah thats all sensible Solro.. But in the video they tell u to buy it from amazon!! Maybe the least anonymous way to buy something. using credit card, amazon account, getting it delivered to ure address etc.

I'm sure they have a referral code 😳

Same advice was being circulated in the HKSAR not too long ago.

In answer to the desciption, yes, I've assumed stuff like this was inevitable at least as far back as 2002-2003 when they started disappearing immigrants and US citizens of middle eastern descent and some details of the massive domestic surveillance program started to leak. I mean, you knew that kind of stuff happened before then but once it started to be more mask-off in the wake of 9/11 there was really no denying what was going on.

I guess it's still surprising to see so many people actually acknowledging it after how desperate the liberal establishment was to fall in line with the GOP agenda in 2001, and then declare victory forever and go to sleep after Obama won his first term, but that it's happening? Not so surprising. I figured it would take at least 5 more years for us to get to where we are now though, and without Trump and then Covid it would have been at least that long if not 10-15.

Old_Zircon - 2020-06-18

Also I guess the power, importance and availability of burner phones today isn't exactly surprising but different than what I would have expected 20 years ago. Hell, nobody I knew brought any kind of phone to protests back then, most of us didn't even have cell phones.

So I'd be surprised about how fast the cyberpunk dystopia had advanced and how bland it is in real life.

simon666 - 2020-06-19

When I attended a BLM event recently I just left my phone at home. That doesn't solve the want to record, but does solve one tracking vector.

SolRo - 2020-06-23

I remember seeing some cave paintings in a museum that showed a time when one could buy a camera that is not a part of a cellphone. Such savage times those must have been.

simon666 - 2020-06-23

I wasn't making the case that one couldn't record with a camera that wasn't part of a phone, but saying leave a phone at home doesn't particularly respond to this need: To document/record video that is streamed live and or saved to the cloud. Presumably people like recording with a phone because it helps prevent video being destroyed or confiscated during the protest. The phone allows the video to be immediately broadcast and backed up. Any internet enabled camera that is not a phone will have to rely on wireless hot spots, which aren't guaranteed to be available at a protest and if they are available their security isn't assured.
