Marlon Brawndo - 2020-11-07
I'm going to make a confession here. I have never seen any of these movies before. I have friends that obsess over James Bond but the series never appealed to me. I have never seen more than a few minutes of this stupid movie series and it's the most popular thing ever.
The only James Bond movie I have seen all the way through is Casino Royale and I didn't think it was that good. I haven't ever seen a classic James Bond movie. I have no desire to. I have friends that are diehard fans of Sean Connery, who I know from other movies but...holy fuck. Strangling a woman with her own bra? That's a pass for me and I love stupid action movies. This is just unpleasant.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-11-07 You don't have to like Bond; plenty of people don't. One of the things about Bond is that it's always basically aping whatever is popular at the time (e.g., Jason Bourne -> Casino Royale), so for me a big part of the appeal is going back in time to see what was "cool" at any given point in history. Because cool is all Bond is ever trying to be.

Marlon Brawndo - 2020-11-07 Hazelnut, I'll consider it. Especially if it has tons of blackface in it!

garcet71283 - 2020-11-07 To Two Jar Slave's point, the next Bond's movies will most likely be "Superhero" movies. Probably looking something like Moonraker but dialed up with extensive CGI and science-fantasy Q gadgets.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, it might actually be fun after the dour Craig years.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-11-07 Absolutely, garcet. The public's current apetite for irreverence could push Bond into some deep Roger Moore or latter-day Brosnan waters. Should be fun!
I also assume some sort of cinematic universe will be attempted, with spin-offs for Q, young M prequels, other 00 agents, etc. Attempted and promptly cancelled.

Nominal - 2020-11-08 Roger Moore's were overall the most fun camp, but I've got to go with Goldeneye as the best overall.
This is balanced out by the rest of Brosnan's being the worst. Yes, even worse than On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Craig's entire run has been a mixed mess of dour, Borne Identity, and emotional vulnerability. All of them botched.
Connery's Bond had its charm, but his movies were just dull. They're 90% just bouncing around to Club Med resorts.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-11-08 I don't understand the flak On Her Majesty's Secret Service always gets. It's a good adventure, very well shot for a Bond film (don't take my word for it -- Christopher Nolan cites it as a major visual influence), and Lazenby was suitable as the first non-Connery actor.
You're right about Goldeneye, though. Same director as Casino Royale, and it shows. Both have the right mix of momentum, characterization, stupid fun, and brawn. Goldeneye is top-shelf, and, honestly, Tomorrow Never Dies is a fine follow-up. I don't remember The World is Not Enough at all, so it's probably that one and Die Another Day that forever ruined Brosnan's legacy.
|
Nominal - 2020-11-09 The tank chase from Goldeneye is objectively the best single scene in the entire franchise.
The chase scenes from all the Craig movies just made me check the time and fiddle on my phone until they were over.

Raggamuffin - 2020-11-10 I think On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of the best ones honestly. Especially since its the only one with a Bond-Girl that is a real match for Bond (RIP Diana Rigg). And some of the best music of the series also. Of course like all Bond films you have to look the other way on a lot of the films uneven and misogynistic-even-by-the-standards-of-the-time parts you see in most Bond films.
Film Crit Hulk is a huge Bond fan and basically wrote a book in installments online with the central thesis that each Bond film can be viewed as an overreaction to the previous one. I can't seem to get the Day 1 post to come up but here is Day 2

I'm not into Bond films.
