I think this can be summed up by a blurb I read where tons of people on the team were asking, "How do they expect us to make an rpg AND grand theft auto with a fraction of Rockstar's resources?"

From my small amount of experience as a developer of commercial video games, hype is the enemy. I feel bad for these guys, because it seems like their heart was in the right place, and people love the shit out of their Witcher stuff. (I've never played any of these games, but I think that's what put 'em on the map.) It really feels like their publisher demanded they push it out the door, bugs or no, in response to the outcry over delays, and this is a pretty inevitable result. All of these embarassing glitches look like evidence that they were working on deeper challenges, as they probably should've been, to support an ambitious design.

Unless they're self-published, in which case they're dumbshits. There's lots of evil shit that can be rightly said of Blizzard (mainly WRT labor practices), but the main reason they are basically printing money when they print game discs is that they release no wine before its time, and they axe projects like they're impervious to sunken cost fallacies.

CD Projekt Red coasts on the success of The Witcher and good will from the fact that they own GOG and sell stuff DRM free on there, they do self publish, making them technically an indie developer just in the sense that they are not owned by a large multinational media conglomareate unlike EA , ActiBlizz and Ubi.

That being said their hype machine was very Daikata, it was very late 90s.

This happens like once a year and gamers still fall for the "this game accurately simulates all the human organs in every npc so that damage mechanics are realistic" hype next year. And then get all mad about it.

It is difficult to imagine a more avoidable scam. All you have to do is not preorder the game, wait a day for some reviews to come out, and Ctrl-F through one or two for the word "bug". If it's not ready, you come back in six months and purchase the finished game for half the price.

I feel like all the rage I'm seeing stems from shame over a lack of the most basic impulse control.

Fallout 76? I dunno if that was over-hyped. They kind of released it soon after announcing it so it was maybe more like when you're in the mall and realize you got the squirts.

Yeah while Fallout 76 was bad on release, it didn't get the months/years/decade-long marketing train that these other ones did. It's also a much smaller game concept just reusing an existing engine.

No Man's Sky would be an obvious one for enormous hype followed by a severely disappointing launch, although people say the post-launch support has turned it into a good game. I guess it just needed another four years in the oven.

I got burned by hype for the MMO Age of Conan back in the day. That was my only pre-order, and boy was it ever a lesson learned.

When your expectations are in check, Fallout 76 and No Man's Sky are both really innovative experiences with some minor technical flaws. Those are my 2 favorite video games of the last half of the 2010's.

I played ME3 years after release, and had no idea there was a spat over some unsatisfying ending. I played 3 games and saved the galaxy, so I loved it.
