Does it involve punching down or mocking people with disabilities? I'm guessing most people grew out of whatever it is when they turned 15.

Violet Intents - 2021-04-07

Funny you should say that, I recognize this guy from Maxim magazine back when I use to read it in my early teens (still fucking embarrassed about that to this day along with UFO pants and listening to Primer 55). Looking back the magazine was a joke and not a very good one and he was I think the Editor in Chief of it. Looks like his idea of "funny" is still something a teen with no real world experience would find funny or in this case the average Fox News viewer, who pathetically tend to not be teens.

I caught once online a clip from his show Red Eye...it's just a circle jerk of smug unfunny conservatives "making jokes" about curee t events aka being complete mean spirited dipshits patting each other on the back.

The font and colour choice make it look like a Garfield special.

‘I hate minorities’

(Rimshot. Laugh track.)

instead of Mondays, Gutfeld hates brown people

There have been many attempts at conservative "comedy" shows: The Half Hour News Hour, This Just In, Tough Crowd, and many others. All failed miserably because conservatives confuse lazy bullying with humor.

This one is going to be a success, though. Not because it's funny, but because conservatives will consider it their duty to PRETEND it's funny on social media in their life-consuming quest to own the libs.

Cena_mark - 2021-04-07

Conservatives did the same thing for the Half Hour News Hour. But perhaps that's the problem with pretending to enjoy a show, you don't actually watch it. Having a Daily Show to call their own is the white whale of right wing propagandists

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2021-04-07

Tough Crowd dovetailed with Comedy Central's practice of spamming a format once it backs into something successful. Fox News spends YEARS ingratiating their talking heads into chosen roles, and Gutfeld's the designated "great late night hope" at this point.

A main problem there is, late night is a nice frill. The Daily Show is a long-established brand. The networks prioritize stuff like NFL rights in a grab for any relevance whatsoever. If Fox News' main objective is to age down its demo instead of OWNING COLBERT/DAILY SHOW etc., it's playing with "hilarious Limbaugh-style comedy" house money and always has.

Crackersmack - 2021-04-07

I wouldn't call Tough Crowd conservative, at least not the same type of conservative as Fox shit is.

I've spent the last decade wondering why anyone ever found Colin Quinn funny. His standup is atrocious, and all his talk formats just has him belting out the laziest, most obvious sarcastic comment. Like your obnoxious dullard uncle who responds to everything with "Tell us how you really feel!"

Crackersmack - 2021-04-07

I just want a panel show about politics hosted by a comedian that isn't Bill fucking Maher. I used to like The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore but that only lasted like a year.

Adjuvant - 2021-04-07

I like Larry Wilmore's show, too, but there were some godawful shit-takes from some of the panelists. One episode I watched where they were discussing the death penalty was so bad that one of the panelists seemingly walked off during the commercial break. When they came back there was some old lady from the audience on the panel instead and everyone played it off like it was planned.

Actually, just found an article about that episode (if anyone is still interested in a show from 6 years ago): https://www.mediaite.com/tv/msnbcs-alex-wagner-gets-in-intense-dea th-penalty-debate-on-the-nightly-show/

While I'm not conservative at all, I did like Tough Crowd and at least the time, it seemed a mix of both sides shooting the shit so to speak. That and I only really watched when Greg Giraldo were on or Patrice O'Neil. Colin was and is still a very full comedian who's shtick (like leary's to an extent) is "I'm blue collar and Irish and tell jokes with a aggressive wannabe tough guy bent". It was only years later on YouTube rewatching clips (like when Giraldo took Leary to task, still my favorite thing ever) that I started noticing a conservative slant to some of it.

That said I largely agree, conservative comedy fails as it's just being really fucking mean, with no real set up or anything, just be mean and let the punchline be whomever your being mean and malicious to.

Nominal - 2021-04-07

There does exist an art to mean punch down humor, but it either has to be pretty creative (Alec Baldwin in Glengarry) or the joke has to be on the SPEAKER rather than the target, when the the speaker is so deluded and pompous that they can't see that THEY are the joke.

That's why so much conservative humor falls under Poe's Law. It's humor by deluded and pompous jackasses.

Scrimmjob - 2021-04-08

I don't like his more recent stand up, more of a weird one man show type thing, but I do think Colin is funny and will usually check out anything with him involved.
