Love this movie

I've read the book, not even aware there was a movie...is it worth watching?

80's scifi. You have to love it.

A well-made flick that had the misfortune of living in the shadow of a masterpiece.

Roy Scheider is cool.

Yeah, it's not a bad film. It isn't on the same transcendent level as 2001, but it continues the story properly and is fairly accurate to the book. For awhile I had hoped some of the cast would return for 2061 which I think would have made a good movie, but that's probably never going to happen. Buzz in Hollywood is that they want to skip right to 3001, which I don't think would work out too well.

Three things:

1. Over/under on number of days until the first landing on Europa?

2. I wish Jupiter really would turn into a star. That would be sweet.

3. Everybody really used to think the Cold War would go on forever or that we'd end up nuking the whole damn planet. In spring of 1989, my high school history teacher informed us that the Berlin Wall would never come down. We believed him.

I had a paper route during the Reagan years. The day Andropov died and Chernenko took power, it was reported in the Sunday edition. I was up by myself at 4 in the morning reading about what I assumed was the beginning of the end of the world. It was in 1984 and the hype over Orwell's book was also fresh in my mind. I threw up.

Movies like 2010, the Day After, and War Games completely captured my imagination. I was convinced that the nuclear war was inevitable because there sure as hell wasn't any star child with a bunch of monoliths coming to bail us out.

Contrary opinion: Total shite. It legitimizes HAL's assertion that the problem was "human error," subverting the entire first movie.

An entirely adequate sequel and in its way tribute to 2001, with a good head on its shoulders and daring to be optimistic about the future during a time when most SF movies started off with crap like "THE YEAR IS 1998 - NUCLEAR WAR HAS DEVASTATED THE PLANET" or just took a nod from Alien(s) and had bugs ripping our guts out at every turn.

This movie was pretty mediocre. This scene isn't the most cliched thing ever only because you can't jump off a dock into the ocean just before the explosion in space.
