If you haven't seen this, you have failed at life.

My friends complain that it's too soft on McNamara--that you want to go out and have a beer with him afterwards--but it's still really good if you ask me. Cuban Missile Crisis stuff is absolutely great.

I feel like that's kind of the point of the best Errol Morris films. He takes horrible people who have done horrible things and makes them human and understandable. I wouldn't say I would want to have a beer with MacNamara, but I do feel like I understand him better. Also, Morris makes a point of asking some very difficult questions (who was responsible, do you feel guilty) and filming MacNamara's rationalization or evasions.

Evasion? The guy admitted he had more or less committed war crimes.

Lothy - 2007-12-31

Well, he admits that for World War II, but I was referencing the two points where Morris asks him point blank "Whose responsibility is it?" and "Do you feel guilty" and his answers were "the president's" and "I'm not going to talk about that."

The worst deeds in human history have all been committed by humans. Not a scapegoated abstract evil. Understanding that is necessary to surviving as a species.

Roachbud's earned himself a pass from all jokes at his expense for a while with this one.

isn't this that show about that natural born leader who had a lot of charisma and valid points, and acted in the best interest of an entire nation - which was too ignorant to properly thank him?

THERE ARE THESE THINGS CALLED BOOKS

I've Chosen my own Adventure, before, thanks.

This is an incredible inside look at McNamara's total refusal to admit to his involvement in Vietnam and take responsibility. He admits to making mistakes but his evasion at the end is nothing short of staggering.

I also love his denial over the illegality of Agent Orange. That goes for a lot of things about Vietnam...about no guidelines being present in the law. Yeah, there's no real law about bombing people with nuclear bombs either, but just because there isn't one written doesn't mean you should just jump in you fucking asshole.
