Overspecialize and you breed in weakness.

Udderdude - 2008-03-23

Yes.

Aelric - 2008-03-23

this is an example of the exceedingly rare "good animes"

Hodge - 2008-03-23

Agreed.

Scynne - 2008-03-24

Correction: It is one of the exceedingly rare "good, popular animes"

kiint - 2008-03-23

shooting up the tree is just one of the many, many subtleties in this sequence

Jeff Fries - 2008-03-23

Go on

Merzbau - 2008-03-23

It's a Tree of Life ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_life_%28science%29 ), with humanity at the top. I dunno about subtle, but it's certainly an effective image. Also note the transitional fossils that get the crap shot out of them.

Urist - 2008-03-23

Are they cyborgs or just robots? whatever...

dead_cat - 2008-03-23

Cyborgs.

kiint - 2008-03-23

cyborgs, the remaining human spirit is the "ghost" in some sense

SolRo - 2008-03-23

Only the brain is really human.

ani-beard

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-03-23

Shiro Masamune is a very talented pervert.

Aubrey McFate - 2008-03-23

You'd both get along well, I suspect.

Aubrey McFate - 2008-03-23

You can tell that the Wachowskis watched this right before starting on the Matrix.

SolRo - 2008-03-23

They admit as much.

Cinnamon Imperialist - 2008-03-23

Legend has it that they showed the movie to some studio-types and said "We want to do this, but in real life."

Screwtape - 2008-03-23

As well as reading "The Invisibles".

FABIO2 - 2008-03-23

Toasty Frog was right. I think the reason they kept having her get naked was to remind you that it was supposed to be a woman.

garcet71283 - 2008-03-23

Actually, I think the excessive nudity in the movie actually enforces that they are not human.

The nudity in the film is almost like the nudity in classical sculpture, very sterile and matter-of-fact.

That and Masumune has iterated that he likes to draw women's asses.

SolRo - 2008-03-23

I think they were being realistic as much as anything else, the optical camo they use is on the skin, you cannot go completely invisible while wearing all your clothing.

Though the TV series completely throws that out the window to make it airable.

FABIO2 - 2008-03-23

You people should really listen to yourselves sometime.

Aubrey McFate - 2008-03-23

=(

SolRo - 2008-03-23

Oh no's! Someone's afraid someone on the internet might think they're nerdy!

What are you, 14 years old?

garcet71283 - 2008-03-23

We are on poeTV....

I think that sums it up right there.

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-02-25

FABIO2, that means almost nothing coming from you and you know it.

Hooker - 2008-03-23

One star for anime.

Xenocide - 2008-03-23

Sorry you can't appreciate good film.

Sudan no1 - 2008-03-23

stop pretending you don't love the fuck out of naked robot fights.

kingarthur - 2008-03-23

Beautiful movie as is the sequel. Mamoru Oshii can make me his cabana boy for directing these and Avalon.

Also, subtext alert: Bato and Kusanagi have an unacknowledged thing for each other, which is possibly supressed due to their both being post-human.

Merzbau - 2008-03-23

Also: I'm not ususally one to nerd out about such things, either in movies or real life, but Batou's gun at the end of the clip is FUCKING BADASS. Bullets the size of a fire extinguisher!

Xenocide - 2008-03-23

Now this is what I'm talking about.

Samisyosam - 2008-03-23

Great art and great directing. I thoroughly enjoy it when a cartoon, anime or not, can mix wild visuals with a realistic sense of proportion. It's a shame because 99% of anime does not have that. All of its talent is squandered making thoughtless and repetitive crap. I could do without the highly exaggerated movements, quivering facial expressions, tentacles or wavy-lined "ohmygodthisdudeisflyingthroughtheair" action shots. Seriously Japan, get laid and lay off the caffeine.

Keefu - 2008-03-23

I saw this movie when I was around 7 or 8.

Man that was a liberating experience.

Screwtape - 2008-03-23

-1 for bad voice acting. For all I know, the original Japanese was just as bad, but at least subtitles mask it.

Harveyjames - 2008-03-23

Guys this film is not good :(

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-04-27

You are incorrect.

Dr. Lobotomy - 2008-03-23

What was the point of her over stressing her body and ripping it to shreds? Beyond needing her helpless in the next sequence, the whole thing is stupid.

In the cybernetic future they can hook up brains to robot bodies and the internet with a quick surgery but don't have a built in warning indicators when whatever retarded thing the cyborg is trying to pull off is going to totally fuck up their shit?

Mike Tyson?! - 2008-03-23

From what I've seen of the whole series, she just doesn't give a shit if her body gets totally destroyed because she can just get a new one. If ripping her arms completely off was going to get that hatch open then the arms are a small price to pay. You've never, ever, tried to pick something up and hurt your back from lifting too much?

FABIO2 - 2008-03-29

It's so people can jerk off to muscle women getting torn to bloody shreds. THIS IS ART, PEOPLE

Pangalin - 2008-03-23

The greatness of these films is tempered somewhat by my knowledge of the horrid, horrid comics they derive from.

ashtar. - 2008-03-23

Great animation, and a great setting–and yet somehow burningly, intensely, boring. Nothing happens, nothing continues to happen, long non sensical exposition of some really simple idea, some violence, nothing happens again, the end.

The series, however, it just completely unwatchably horrible.

Cinnamon Imperialist - 2008-03-23

How could you not enjoy Philosophy 101 lectures from sentient tanks with little girl voices?

Baby Finster - 2008-03-23

The best scene in the film; gets -1 star for being attached to a 20 minute scene of horribly boring low-grade philosohpical exposition (aka the boat scene).

BornAgainCannibal - 2008-03-23

Fuck the bouncers, this is good stuff

AgentOrange - 2008-03-23

Why do so many fucking jerks insist on rating the context of clips? Or the genre? Or the medium?

If you like action movies, or anime, or robots or fucking water effects this sequence is awesome. Get over yourself.

FABIO2 - 2008-03-29

seriously, can't a guy enjoy his dismembering muscle women fetish?

Adramelech - 2008-03-23

Five stars because I'm not a giant douchebag.

The McK - 2008-03-23

I was sorely tempted to dock this a star because it marks the point that an entire generation went "Oh wow animes!" and we all know what followed.

But then I watched it and realized the Major's voice actress sounds uncannily like Angel Cop. And that's a neat concept!

coprolalia - 2008-03-23

Got hooked by stuff like Robot Carnival and wished on some bad star it were easier to get.
A few years later it's everywhere and we're all giant faggots.

Borborygmus - 2008-03-24

um... Akira?

Borborygmus - 2008-03-24

I found this movie pretty dull. I always fast forward to this scene which is where shit finally starts to happen. A few more scenes like this and the movie would have been liked by more than just critics.

vissarion - 2008-03-24

If you had played the music from that scene out of context for me I would never have imagined that it came from a scene with a naked cyborg fighting a spider tank.

Aubrey McFate - 2008-03-24

Also: Heavy vs. Spy.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-04-24

Borborygmus, TheMcK, and Adramelech are full of truth and justice.

Although what FABIO2 says above is true also. This scene is canon in the Cartoon Cyborg Muscle Woman Dismemberment Gun Fetish community. Tell 'em, Caminante!

(Oh god I hope there really is such a community out there. Make it happen PoE)

soci-o-path - 2008-05-16

First anime I got on VHS =)

Riskbreaker - 2010-05-01

I love the movie, but the show is way better. Still 5 stars.

Gmork - 2014-02-24

Two tolerable movies, one HORRIBLE series.
