Trent Reznor wrote about "hurt".. but only a dying old man can express how it feels

SonOfSlam - 2006-04-29
We can all pack it up. After this, what's the point?
|
MindGeyser - 2006-05-08
One of the very few cases where I like the original and think the cover blows it away.

romancingtrain - 2006-05-16
crying

If you aren't moved by this, then you have no soul.

I wish I could have met this man.

A superb take on a good song.

Hell yes.

Universally loved by people who never heard of him until 2003 and don't like country music.

My boss hates Johnny Cash. However, he loves Lincoln Park.
This is known in the scientific world as "having incredibly shitty taste in music."

Operation Cornflakes - 2007-07-23
After this, it's no longer Trent Reznor's song.

Saw this a while back. Now I can add my measly two cents here as well. Still makes me cry.
|
Cleaner82 - 2008-06-30
I didn't used to like this, but in the past few years it's really grown on me. Part of it I guess is if you know who the guy was, you know he definitely earned the right to sing it and mean it.

Wow.
Tears.
|
Pillager - 2008-08-30
Will I ever stop crying whenever I hear this cover?
|
j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-09-19 Try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
What have I become?
|

I would never have believed that something that awful, horrible, worthless piece of shit hack Reznor wrote could have had any redeeming value.
Instead this not only has value but is incredibly good.

I've been holding out on rating this because I've been waiting for access to the sixth star. I don't think that's coming, so 5 it is.

Jeff Fries - 2008-12-12
Now here is a pretty good argument against letting Mark Romanek direct anything ever

Lauritz Melchior - 2009-01-09
Thank you for posting this. This video/song got me into Johnny Cash.
|
joelkazoo - 2009-03-04
The scene of Johnny crying at 3:12 never fails to move me.

JC has always and will always be the voice of the "everyman" in America. He has also always had a knack for finding the most talented voices of the time and co-opting their lyrics and songs and making them his own. e.g. Dylan, Paul Simon, Beck, Soundgarden, NIN etc.
Also he almost bested Columbo once.
5 stars for that alone.

I just have to quote a Something Awful article here... "When did country die?"
"I think it was that time Johnny Cash sang "Hurt" and everyone loved it because he was old and dying and not Trent Reznor at age 28 writing it after doing some special drug that only he had called Drooosh off the tits of naked models in a French Quarter hotel."
Yeah. It works because Johnny actually means it.

|
j lzrd / swift idiot - 2009-11-14 I'd like to cut your sexual organs from the rest of your body, then give you cool Native American face paint from the blood before I shove said meat into your mouth in such a way as to preclude spitting it out, and in such quantity that swallowing it would choke you.
I only say this in the true spirit of hyperbole around here; I'd probably key your car or throw bologne on it.

Lies, lies, LIES! - 2009-10-05
Wins my "lead into gold" award. And good on Reznor for saying, "This is no longer my song."
I always choke up a bit when June shows up.
