In my humble opinion, the director's cut really isn't that great and even the DVD (at least the original one) had a preface by Ridley Scott that it isn't his preferred cut and he didn't really want it called the director's cut.
Basically, they took all of the usable deleted footage from the original Alien box set and put it back into the film, but kept the film roughly the same length by taking out little bits and pieces here and there. It ends up screwing up the pace and original editing of the film. Probably nothing too noticeable to anyone who isn't a huge fan of the original, but it really changes the overall feel of the film, which had a carefully built build-up and flow. If they had JUST added this scene in where it was supposed to go and nothing else it might have been interesting, but I think they tampered with it too much just to get a quick cinematic re-release out of it.
Even what's posted here is cut down. Dallas and Ripley had more of a conversation in the version I saw, where he explains that the half-formed egg is actually Brett.
I still remember the TV trailers when Alien first came out in '79. I had nightmares for years after, which is as good an argument as any that this is a fucking brilliant movie with an even more brilliant ad campaign.
See? Now that foreshadows the "Kill...me..." in Alien Resurrection pretty well. Was that so hard? Oh I guess it was and as a result French directors look crazy now. Thanks, editing!
She didn't so much kill him as just blast his face with aerosol flamethrower for a second. So he's still slowly being eaten alive only now he has third degree burns on his face. Way to go, Ripley. Jerk.
Also, come to think of it, what's the deal with those flamethrowers? Do they not have regular sidearms because they could theoretically depressurize the hull? Why would there be flamethrowers on a non-military ship?
Ridley Scott may have good director skills but his DVD commentaries are total garbage. He spends his entire time on the track simply describing what's happening in each scene and how the story unfolds...it's practically the "seeing impared" audio track.
