He wants to distribute wealth - THE BASTARD!

jangbones - 2008-10-15

It's the Readers' Digest network.

voodoo_pork - 2008-10-15

I'm pretty sure Obama actually said something to this guy. You wouldn't know it from the video. Nice to see Obama's position fairly and accurate represented on Mushy White Boy Pundit's show.

glendower - 2008-10-15

That guy is just an average Joe who earns over 100,000 a year. He's just a regular guy. Really.

Screwtape - 2008-10-15

And can afford to buy a 0,000 year PROFIT business.

baleen - 2008-10-15

His concerns are pretty valid. People should have a right to expand without being afraid of a tax ceiling. Obama answered it truthfully and it makes a lot of sense.

The argument led by conservatives that the wealthy will simply leave the country isn't true, since we've lived through wars where taxes on the wealthy were much higher and nobody jumped ship, and besides, the Republicans are sort of admitting that the people who they are representing are greedy fucks who don't give a shit about America, which is an Achilles heel in the theory that I wish Democrats would attack a little bit more.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2008-10-15

Baleen says it right. If you were in this guy's shoes chances are you'd be a little concerned over the possibility of a tax ceiling coming in to take more of your money, even if it is well over 0,000. However, to Obama's credit in the original video, he deals with this guy's concerns head-on. Furthemore, Obama gives concrete explanations to his motivations for his plan and is even respectful enough to realize that he might not get the guy's vote.

I mean, the guy's got every single right to be concerned. That being said, I wonder how McCain would handle this exact same conversation. Let nothing be said of Sarah Palin. NOTHING.

Kingofthehobos - 2008-10-15

Whats this guy's definition of the American Dream? Get as much money as possible before he gets sick and dies penniless in a hospital because his HMO doesn't cover something?

I also love that he is angry that he can't buy a new house and a business the same year because of a 3% tax increase on his profits over 250,000 ? I mean first of all... houses are cheap now!! The free market works people!

sliggy - 2008-10-15

I commented on this on the other video that shows the entire exchange. They were doing the same editing on talk radio, but it was harder to tell without the visual clues because the audio is so poor. It seriously sounds like "I'm gonna get taxed more" "Because I want to redistribute the wealth!" Horrifying.

Camonk - 2008-10-15

"You're my kind of plumber: selfish and resentful, disdaining now to let a tiny portion of your success--which came at the expense of other people, many of them poorer--help other people out." I like the soft, doughy guy trying to seem like he knows how a hard-working plumber feels.

heyitslozeau - 2008-10-15

god, fuck this shit, and fuck you joe you bald plumber fake fuck.

you have no capital gains tax and a huge tax credit as a small business which will save you far more than the few thousand dollars you'll get taxed on extra, Obama explained this to you. so fuck you you fake plant.

simon666 - 2008-10-15

This is what is so retarded about the American convoluted tax system. NOBODY knows how much they are actually getting taxed. On the surface this guy appears to be getting taxed more. But because he has more money and options in how to save, invest, and move it around, he will effectively pay less.

This really is why a flat tax is better. You make more, you pay more... because 20% of 100k is more than 20% of 50k. You are taxed once on income only. The poor who make below X amount don't have to pay taxes (IE get a refund or credit etc). That way people can work hard to make more, while only losing the same percentage of their earnings in taxes.

kingarthur - 2008-10-15

Meanwhile the people who earn, say, k a year before taxes get screwed into a life of misery and blinding poverty, more so than before. Yeah, sounds fair. Because you honestly believe they won't find some way to screw the poor by, I dunno, taxing their health benefits?

Progressive taxation, as outlined by Obama, is much better and far more fair.

Helena Handbasket - 2008-10-15

And this is exactly why I hate people who bitch about the cost of universal health care. Yeah, you're basically paying up front and you're pitching in for the care of others.

But, oh no you're paying up-front and pitching in for the care of others. Horrible. Horrible humanitarian thinking right now.

glenn - 2008-10-15

"Rather than just play the exchange, why don't we let it play silently while you tell us how you interpreted Obama's remarks, Joe?"

Squidmojo - 2008-10-15

"This sounds like socialism, which I am against except for when government bails out my bank and gives me libraries and shit."

RomancingTrain - 2008-10-15

You think any of these people read anything other than the Washington Times?

caged ant - 2008-10-15

Under the current rate he pays ,699 per year on 0,000 of gross profit, leaving him with 6,301 before he pays for health insurance. The 39% bracket has him paying 1,400 (,800 more), but also gives him ,000 for health care.

glenn - 2008-10-15

FAIL.

Samisyosam - 2008-10-15

Down with socialism! Oh wait... I kinda needed those paved roads to get to work.

sosage - 2008-10-15

Reasonable tax plan that is explained to me by the candidate in a clear and intelligent manner? That scares me blub blub glub...

Bonus douche points for the whole "it looks like you weren't frightened of him" conversation.

StanleyPain - 2008-10-15

I encourage everyone everywhere to actively punch people in the face whenever they call any of Obama's economic ideas either Socialism or Communism. Then kick them in the groin just to be sure.

simon666 - 2008-10-15

Aye!

Helena Handbasket - 2008-10-15

aye aye!

RomancingTrain - 2008-10-15

The commentary is a little bit more than half the length of the original exchange.

simon666 - 2008-10-15

You don't know anything about the flat tax plan. My guess is you've gleamed superficial (as in, of the surface) information from people speaking generally about the topic of the flat tax, because that is what your language indicates. If you knew anything more in depth you wouldn't have uttered such nonsense.

DMKA - 2008-10-15

DISTRIBUTING WEALTH != SOCIALISM!

lawl

hornung - 2008-10-15

joe barathrum is an asshole.

sosage - 2008-10-15

This guy popped up on the news just after the debate, discussing how McCain did well in the debate...

I don't want to say the word plant...but wtf? This guy's sudden presence is bizarre and his opinion is frustratingly dumb.

Xenocide - 2008-10-16

McCain's debate answers tonight made it seem like he thought Joe the Plumber was the only person in America who mattered.

Now I see why: Joe himself thinks that, too.

FUCK YOU ROBIN HOOD, I'M VOTING FOR PRINCE JOHN!

Seriously, what the hell is up with the Robin Hood comparison? Is Fox not aware that Robin Hood was supposed to be the GOOD GUY?

Chancho - 2008-10-16

``Joe the plumber,'' the Toledo, Ohio, man whose complaints about Barack Obama's tax plan were highlighted by John McCain in the final presidential debate, owes the state of Ohio almost ,200 in back income taxes.
