Trivia: the theme is by John Williams.
It was passable for the time for about a season or so. Then it just got old, and they tried to make it more about the characters, which instantly kills pretty much every sci-fi show ever made. The intro was all SPACE ACTION but I guess the budget for that ran out quick as the show quickly forgot all about that stuff.
It was nowhere near as stupid as the new one, though, which is basically Galactica for nerd fanbase, deviant-art fanfic writers.
The new Galactica always went down best, in my friend group and family, with people who didn't traditionally like sci-fi or who liked modern American drama. I always got the feeling it could have been set in a series of corridors anywhere and still be watchable.
Remember the one with the one dude crashes on the deserted planet with a bunch of cylons who who die but eventually he gets so lonely he repairs the cylon and then they become friends but then a girl comes between them? That one was my favorite.
Terrible show that you desperately wanted, as a child, to be a great show.
After I realized that they were using the same special effects shots of spaceships and laser cannons over and over and over and over (and over), my suspension of crappiness eventually buckled and collapsed.
