It was official, too. ALL of the exits from NO were locked down by local police/sheriffs. San Francisco paramedics were prevented from crossing to the West Bank on a bridge by sheriffs gunfire. Most who made it out on foot to Metairie was kept in an open pen surrounded by razor wire, with limited food and water.

No offence to Drunky McWhiskey, but he's had a lot of embarassing peers in local law enforcement.

My father's family is still in NO, and it will never recover to pre-Katrina levels. Except tourism & the port, what sane company would base a regional HQ there rather than Baton Rouge or Jackson? Once those foundational jobs are gone, the local population drops from 500k (+500 k metro) to maybe half that. My stepmother thought she could strike rich flipping houses during the post-Katrina insurance boom. Now she's stuck with two houses financially underwater.
