Then again, when we first moved to Mississippi I had a professor who was from the Delta and I could not, for the life of me, understand a damn thing she said. It actually affected my grades, believe it or not. She also used colloquialisms that sounded absolutely absurd. The accents on these guys are mild.

No, the subtitles are not nessecary. It's a pet peeve of mine that people seem to require subtitles as soon as they're assaulted by anything but a deadpan midwestern drone. It's English. Learn to understand accents. They happen.

I tend to side liberal on most social issues, I've been directly involved with liberal activist types in organized groups for a good chunk of my life and I have seen next to NO effort made from that bunch to even try to reach out to folks like these. I grew up "down the mountain" in Kentucky and I can tell you that getting a meth head to not only ride a bike but maintain it and not sell it for meth (let alone keep it from getting stolen by other meth heads) is nearly impossible. These people generally hope for one or more of three things: winning the lottery, having a natural disaster hit and receiving FEMA checks, or painless death in their sleep. It's a depressing hellhole and it's primarily because of the culture and drugs. Other than the people, the landscape is wonderful!
