Okay, I'm going to go on record here: The thing that holds back the mentally ill, more than their disorders, is the public perception of the mentally ill and the complete lack of adequate treatment. This kind of thing, though I'm sure their heart's in the right place, is not helping anyone. I feel for the guy, really, but just for once, I, personally, would love to see an intelligent, successful, stable person with a personality disorder who isn't a celebrity. Because they do exist. The idea that you have to be some wounded, unstable savant and must suffer due to your disorder just irks the shit out of me. I'm reminded of the Eddie Izzard joke about the weirdo transvestite and the executive transvestite:

Oh, he has a personality disorder that's why he's so weird/unstable/loserish/slackish. No no no, weirdo with a personality disorder. Me? EXECUTIVE with a personality disorder.

And I'll out myself here: I have one and I keep picking myself up every time it fucks up my shit. So I had to quit grad school twice...but fuck's sake I'm gonna finish it.

Good luck to you.

I heard a news cast on the radio this morning refer to the state's plan to "DEAL WITH the mentally ill"

Sean Robinson
Now that is just crazy talk.

kingarthur
The paranoids probably had a field day with that one.

The man you're looking for is Emanuel Bronner (read it again, there's an "R" after that "B"). First his parents died in a Nazi concentration camp. If that weren't bad enough he was also crazier than a fish with tits. His family had him locked up in an insane asylum in Illinois where got his brain fried on shock treatments and he was blind for the last 30 years of his life. Most of us would have just curled up in a corner of the padded cell in our straight jackets and stayed that way. But after failing to escape twice Bronner succeeded on his third try and started a successful business making "Dr. Bronner's 18-in-1 Pure-Castile Soap". Even though Emanuel Bronner is the measure of all kooks I have to admire him. He wasn't the kind of madman who thought the alien controlled CIA was sending agents to destroy him, his mania involved peace, harmony and cooperation for the entire world. If you don't believe me just go to the store and read the 3,000 tiny words printed on the soap bottle lables.

I hear ya buddy. I've had to quit jobs before because people found out my condition and started to act all weird towards me, even though I wasn't suffering any negative effects at the time.

kingarthur
Thanks, Mr. Buddy. I'll look up Bronner. And, oh oddeye, we've all been there. All it takes is one little letter from your company's insurance holder to the HR department. Which isn't supposed to be able to happen, but...

I don't dig the opening, but I can relate to his illness. So, five for him.

Someone should put me on a poster saying "It's okay to suck at life"

baleen

Keep in mind that I did not submit this because I felt bad for this guy, and the torture he inflicted on the world with the opening is why.
kingarthur
Oh agreed, that's why I gave it a five. Mental illness is no excuse for terrible poetry.
