Merzbau - 2009-03-30 This is very very early League, and the closest recorded version of "Being Boiled" is the Fast Product flexidisc version, on the reissued CD of Reproduction. Travelogue is a bit more solid as an album, and one of the reissue bonus tracks is the fleshed-out single release of "Being Boiled," which isn't as good but is an interesting comparison. There's a comp called "The Golden Hour of the Future" on Richard X's label, Black Melody, that covers the pre-Reproduction stuff.
Dare is where the actual musicians in the League called it quits and formed British Electronic Foundation/Heaven 17, and thanks to producer Martin Rushent more or less replacing them, Dare is just as awesome as early League, albeit in a different way. Do yourself a favor and stop after Dare, though. They have their single moments after that- "Fascination," "The Lebanon," and, a highly divisive song that I think is near-complete crap, "Human"- but the albums generally aren't worth bothering with.
Heaven 17, on the other hand, made "Penthouse and Pavement," which is a stone-cold fucking classic, and the first BEF album is pretty damn good too.

I blame Merzbau for me starting to looking for a better version of this song and finishing by listening to four hours of synth and new wave.
