A shame it cuts off early. I wanted to see the rest of it, having never heard of her before. She's clearly quite bright and it's a shame that the host and audience seemed to focus on her 'other attributes.'
I was trying to pick something with geek credibility.
Her first real movie was "Age of Consent" in which she appeared naked in almost every scene, with James Mason sort of reprising his Lolita role. She's a waifish beachcomber in Australia. Directed by Michael Powell! It's pretty bad, but definitely worth renting. She was naked before that in a BBC production of Midsummer's Night Dream (she was in the Royal Shakespeare Company). Also contains naked Judi Dench!
Mirren is one of my favorite actors, ever since my first exposure ("The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover"). The 30 year's later Parkinson's interview is remarkable as well.
What do your parents do? "I don't want to think of them as jobs"
How was school? "They made us wear socks, I'm still dealing with the mental anguish"
Do you think you might like to write or direct? "I don't like to plan things"
Man I don't want to be that guy but...I bet she's fun at parties.
In the 30 years later interview she basically calls him out and admits that she was a little stiff, whereas Parkinson doesn't really see what he did wrong. I think that's what women call the "bumbling lovable chauvinist." Like Ingmar Bergman and your grandpa.
I'd be a little off too if a drunk dick in a suit started the interview by stoically talking about my tits and saying that as a result of my tits I might not a be a real actress. But these were the days when we were still trying to figure this shit out. It's just awkward from all angles.
