Also, why dont we build maglev trains inside vacuum tubes? That would provide virtually free travel... Oh wait, just answered my own question.
Saw a TV show once about a transatlantic train that ran in a vacuum tube on the floor of the ocean. Apparently, it would cost as much as a bank bailout and benefit humanity, so no one would ever do it.
