there are roughly 800 sumo wrestlers, of which only about 70-80 are in the top two pro divisions (juryo & makuuchi). they're the only ones who get paid and enjoy the benefits that provides

the rest of em' toil in the lower divisions (makushita, sandamme, jonidan, jonokuchi, and maezumo) for almost no money, and they're required to be the servants and to take shit fromeverybody who ranks above them on the banzuke (ranking list) which gets reshuffled w/ the results of each tournament. incentive, japanese style.

these guys are in jonokuchi, i think, which is why nobody gives a fuck. the stadium doesn't usually fill up until the afternoon when the juryo division bouts are over and the makuuchi matches start.
