After this was performed the first time, there was no point to doing it again. Half of the entertainment was listening to people getting pissed off and throwing shit because they had no idea what was going on.
4:33 today just sounds like furiously polite masturbation by everyone involved and not a single reacharound in sight.
We did this shit in school. It was the called the "lets see who can be the quietest" game. So not profound.
5 stars. this isn't the portal of unicorns
i so would have let out a huge fart if I were there
Taken seriously? Nobody in the audience is making a god damn sound. It was an art piece taking a snapshot of people when they're uncomfortable and confused. When john cage wasn't doing this, he was putting on shows for ridiculous amounts of money where he'd show up 30 minutes late, dump an entire toolbox into a piano, play three notes and walk off the stage. There's supposed to be vitriolic tension, but it's completely absent here in the face of fundamentalist fanboyism.
This whole thing was just a waste of time in my opinion. If this was a video of 4:33 done correctly it would have needed the "also his balls are huge" tag.
The thing is is that there are other interpretations besides the certainly valid "The Audience Is the Music" version. Some people also believe that the music is in the expectation of sound. By expecting a sound, each audience member effectively imagines a sound, and to a greater extent, music.
And yes, John Cage's music is taken seriously. Especially this piece.
(although to be fair the tags on that used to suck, since I was being an artfag and leaving everything blank)
punch drunk babies

John Cage, as a troll, was largely successful.
Good use of categories.
Dude this is so much better on audiophile vinyl in the original mono.
This video is what convinced me this is art.
John Cage wins... orchestrality.
BLARGH NO TALENT HACK I COULDA DONE THAT BUT NO ONE WOULDA PAID ME BLRADHDSFHJLH
Also: "Music, on the contrary, and what provokes laughter are two kinds of play with aesthetic ideas, or even with representations of the understanding, by which, all said and done, nothing is thought. By mere force of change they yet are able to afford lively gratification." - Immanuel Kant
Put another way, beautiful things don't need to have a purpose, they only need to seem as if they do.
I kind of look at this the way I look at a lot of Andy Warhol's work. Yeah, pretty much anybody could have come up with it, but this guy did it first.
