You know there is an invention called television and on this invention they show shows, right? Well these people are the actors in one of these shows. They are "playing" "characters. " You follow so far?

It has to do with subtext and what the subtext explains about the people and environment the actors and scene are depicting.

It's at worst a little heavy handed, but thats not that surprising considering this is the first season and the show was just getting into stride. But yes, person on the internet, tell me how people in the ghettos of Baltimore REALLY TALK.

When I saw this on TV I had pretty much the same thought. If I had more time I'd watch the series, I'm not going to knock it based on this one scene.

But quoting yourself is never a good sign, so they're lucky they picked a good theme song to make me forget about it.

I should add as well that was a lot better the second time through. Chess allusions just strike me as something you'd see in high school drama (omg we are all just pawns, oh the irony) and since I am such a snob it took me a couple watches to get past that and see some decent writing.

I know people who explain things to one another in metaphor related to the context of their day to day reality. I'm sorry you do not.

So I watched the show, and it's fantastic. This scene wasn't the best as an uninitiated but it didn't bother me at all in the episode. D'Angelo bothered me cause his ghetto accent seems affected, but that's a part of his character, trying to fit in even though he really, really doesn't.

There's a slightly unsettling "gentle savage" vibe to it, isn't there? Like if "Uptown Girl" was set in the antebellum.
