They're a bunch of pussies, running around with dynamite vests. If you go after any one country exhaustively you'll be (a) involving and killing a great many people who have nothing to do with it and (b) serve only to give them more targets to blow up.

No one's actually come out and said it, but the problem with trials has got to be that there's no evidence. Which doesn't mean they're not terrorists, it just doesn't mean that they are. How much evidence can you gather in the middle of a war? Someone from the Northern Alliance fingers you, and you disappear.

I think I heard this on "This American Life". Someone who was actually in charge of Gitmo at one time said that he estimated that 60 per cent of the detainees were innocent. Now that sucks if it's true, and one reason why it sucks is that it means that 40 per cent are real terrorists. So you can't just let them all go, but a trial would have to be something of a joke. They probably all have the same amount of evidence against them, none. This wouldn't be such a problem in a conventional war, you just treat them all humanely and keep them in for the duration. But the war on terror goes on and on and on.

Actually Glenn/da its much worse than that. 68% of Gitmo detainees, 531 out of 779, were released by 2007. This was because many of them either had no reason to suspect guilty or, like the Tripton Three, had been proven innocent shortly after arrest and were held anyway. The people ordering the releases were Bush appointed military judges with broad powers to detain.

After that the "40% of real terrorists" you refer to were labeled by Bush as "the worst of the worst". But a funny thing happened. When we started the process of trials, judges quickly dismissed 28 out of the 33 cases brought not only for a complete lack of evidence, but because many provably had no links to terror or extremist groups, nor had they ever. In other words, out of the "worst of the worst", 85% had their cases immediately thrown out.

This doesn't even include people like the "Chinese Uighurs" who recently made the news. Fox News spewed outrage that these "Muslim terrorists" were under simple house arrest rather than in maximum security or dead. Why did this happen? Because in 2003, once again, they were found to "pose no threat" and had "no ties to terror groups". They were simply held because they couldn't be returned to China.

Despite the reputation Gitmo had for holding terrorists, the truth is that most of the individuals initially stored there were rounded up in mass sweeps, or handed over by "Northern Alliance" militia for money, with the assumption that guilt or innocence would be sorted out later. One man was arrested solely for wearing a Casio watch, which is sometimes used in bombmaking. One was a 14 year old boy was confessed to throwing a grenade. However he only did this after extended torture, and promises his family would be killed if he didn't confess. As any real expert on torture knows, it is a useful tool for getting people to sign confessions and to say what you want, but not for finding truth.

Oh and Cena? The US and Geneva Conventions have long had rules for capturing and trying non-state terror groups. Despite what the Bush Administration suggests, this problem is hardly a new type of warfare, and has actually been more prevalent in the past.

Well RealRobert, I do have similar feelings on some of the statistics he's reading out. We agree that Obama is doing nothing that is actually helping out the economy. Its just his racist trimmings that make him a disgrace.

Now, I'm not so naive that I can't recognize bargaining for what it is. That's what congressional Rs (and Ds) were doing, by and large—trying to get more for their individual districts. Which doesn't bother me. But it's silly to say nothing's been done about the economy when things were done, and they were drastic enough to be unpopular with many.

Plenty of people who dislike Obama that are not racist. But the "hate" in and of itself is weird. When he starts new wars, fails to protect us from terrorists, taps millions of phones illegally, etc, then hate him. In my opinion he hasn't been in office long enough to deserve anyone's hate.
