Here's the full version by way of megavideo: I posted this trailer because I couldn't link to this: http://quicksilverscreen.com/watch?video=120851

There was another post that beat this out of the hopper..."Liberia is Hell on Earth", he called it. That was more a list of atrocities and a fat white guy telling his side of somebody else's story. This story comes straight from the women of Liberia, and it paints a different picture.

Part 5 and 6 are up, now with more atrocities!

You should watch this one. Some of the stories the women tell are horrifying, all the more so because they were actually traumatised by it, unlike so many of the people they interview in your submission. These are terrible things, and even moreso told by somebody who actually experienced it as terror, instead of as sport or a bid for power. Also, I just can't take some fat white guy from North America to be a credible vehicle for a story like this. What does he have to do with any of it, other than some morbid curiosity and sense of first-world horror at a world he can't understand and has nothing in common with? And when they're not getting his opinion, they're talking to drug addicts, boy soldiers, and war lords. The thing that drew me to this documentary is the fact that it's not told from the perspective of the bad guys. The oppressors always get the most airtime; it's in the very nature of oppression.

I apologize, I was really just doing that for the snarky commentary- honestly I am a hopeless optimist and things like this bring me to tears.

About the video I posted though- they are putting up the final segments- it does kinda turn into a story of redemption, about trying to heal the child soldiers and at least one of the generals recognizing what he did was wrong.

The fat guy from North America, though, is pretty honest about the fact that he is just touristing through and documenting his own weird experiences- he does the same with going to Chernobyl and North Korea and all the other messed up places. It's not meant to win any awards, just to show people things they had no idea about.

I dunno if I could even really call it a 'true' documentary- the Vice thing I mean- not like this one- it's more of a gonzo type deal.

I would suggest, if you like more uplifting doco stuff, check out 'Scared Sacred'- about a fellow who travels the world to places like Bhopal and Afghanistan to document how ordinary people refuse to give up and do what they need to to make a horrible thing better.

you are insufferable and it prevents my enjoying this movie

poorwill - 2010-01-26

Fuck off, baumer.

memedumpster - 2010-01-26

Yeah, dude, you're worse than Liberia. How can I possibly enjoy the wonders of Liberia with you around? You are so intolerable that you make Liberia un-fun. Liberia, once a source of endless entertainment for me, is now ruined, because of you. Asshole.

Jesus.

baumer - 2010-01-27

Not sure I think he's worse than Liberia.

I think him downvoting the Vice Guide due to petulance is gross.

BorrowedSolution - 2010-01-27

Yeah, this place would be SO much cooler if we all just got along. Do you want a hug, sweetums?

James Woods - 2010-01-26

Wait, you mean good can come from the depths of desperation and find the strength to fight against the oppressive elements that inflict that very same desperation?

This shit really does make me like my species every so often.
