I've been making this argument for years. The George Romero Zombie is the basic, no-frills store brand, while Frankenstein, the Mummy and Dracula are all essentially just the reanimated dead, but with extra features and added prestige.
I'd say that since Vampires can pass along the trait of being a Vampire they are not technically zombies but are a very aggressive form of virus or subspecies of life, one which can take over the host and propagate itself, like that worm that burrows into the brains of ants to lay its eggs, then the egg hatches and the larva eats the brains of the ant and takes over the body. Vampires are just giant larva.
Frankenstein('s monster) is not a zombie; he's a reanimated person with the basic capabilities and needs of the living. He eats bread and not brains; he drinks wine and not blood.
