Huh..I've never seen this before. Is it on the DVDs? Cuz I have those and don't remember this as an extra.

It's better than I would think a basic pilot would be for this kind of thing.

Macho Nacho - 2010-03-21

I believe it is in the the extras. I forget get which...I suspect they're on each disk but you could try Volume 1...

Jhonen Vasquez originally wanted to voice Zim himself. Nickelodeon, remembering QUITE well what happened the last time they let a cartoonist identify that strongly with a character (John Kricfalusi being the previous example), refused to allow him to do it.

Billy West, who ALSO remembered the historical pattern of Kricfalusi, found that Vasquez's insistence on line readings and specific speech patterns were too close to Kricfalusi's, and so he left the project and proclaimed on college radio that Vasquez was a "spoiled brat".

Jhonen, meanwhile, expressed that this was literally the first time he had ever been anywhere NEAR a large scale animation process, and had no frame of reference as to how to proceed, and therefore West's annoyance was apparently less a case of history preemptively repeating itself and Nickelodeon just hiring random people, throwing several million dollars at them, and seeing what would stick.

Interesting. I guess there's only two ways to go. Either carefully choose people you trust and let them do their thing or micromanage. I don't know how else he'd achieve something as particular and detailed and personal without being a tyrant.

Well, Jhonen Vasquez IS a spoiled brat, but it's pretty clear Billy West, great as he is, wasn't right for this project.

West was definitely not a good choice for zim. Glad things turned out the way they did.

dead_cat - 2010-03-21

I don't know, I like his take on the character better. Less shrieking.

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-03-21

This is a lot brighter than what I'm used to seeing from this show.

Goethe and ernie - 2010-03-21

This is the first time I've ever seen any of this. It's not actually awful.

FeeFiFoFoTheFifeFifeBrown - 2010-03-21

HOLY SHIT BILLY WEST INSTEAD OF...?

AND I GIVE A FUCK BECAUSE...?

FeeFiFoFoTheFifeFifeBrown - 2010-03-21

It's really nice to know which of you clowns ever shopped at Hot Topic, though. Thanks for that.

More organs means more human, bitch.

Candlejackv616 - 2010-03-22

I spit chocolate bubblegum at you.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-03-22

I'm kinda with Fee on this one.

Though I will add that Jhonen being crazy is probably what sank this series. I heard him talk once about how he made everyone cover the studio with red cellophane so that everything would be doused in red light. Way to fuck with your animation staff who rely on clear lighting, you crazy asshole.

This was strange. It felt a lot more like a comic with voice acting than it did a cartoon.
