Fascinating as fuck video, by the way, thanks for sharing.

IrishWhiskey - 2010-04-05

Journalists, civilians and children killed on camera, with cold and reckless indifference.

Yeah, real appropriate response.

svraz - 2010-04-05

I would rather be a weepy vagina than a cold dry cunt.

"Damn it, Kyle!"

takewithfood - 2010-04-05

Fuck.

Chancho - 2010-04-05

Gommorrah, I'd like to see you give some context for this video.

Keefu - 2010-04-05

"A secret video showing US air crew falsely claiming to have encountered a firefight in Baghdad and then laughing at the dead after launching an air strike that killed a dozen people, including two Iraqis working for Reuters news agency, was revealed by Wikileaks today.

The footage of the July 2007 attack was made public in a move that will further anger the Pentagon, which has drawn up a report identifying the whistleblower website as a threat to national security. The US defence department was embarrassed when that confidential report appeared on the Wikileaks site last month alongside a slew of military documents."

unknown rebel - 2010-04-06

A war started over a bunch of mistakes, then a bunch more mistakes happened during its commission, and people lied about them.

This is raw footage of a fuckup and some of the political quotes surrounding it.

Clear?

Syd Midnight - 2010-04-06

I honestly thought the raw video + subtitles was more shocking without the political quotes. Dramatic build up and Orwell quotes takes away from the impact of trigger happy pilots murdering civilians.

Meatsack Jones - 2010-04-05

I am trying to figure out, after using a lot of FLIR time to locate SAR and combat targets, how you can claim he "has an rpg" while in VISLIGHT mode, traversing behind a building with the target in shadow, with about a 2 second window.

You would think the would have gotten another ship on station to confirm, or at least had the ground pounders try to confirm at distance. Just not a great situation to make the call to snuff eight people with only a couple armed. It's not like half the damn people in the middle east don't have an AK with them.

baumer - 2010-04-05

Check out the other video. The two who were identified as armed were journalists with cameras.

Cleaner82 - 2010-04-05

This point and click bullshit where some sociopathic nerd unleashes hell on a grainy half-seen outline from three miles away really pisses me off.

fatatty - 2010-04-05

I didn't see an RPG but there were definitely two guys with AKs walking behind the two journalists the video points out. But like Meatsack said there are a lot of people with guns in Iraq. Many of whom carry them as informal cops where security is low.

The threat of an RPG makes it somewhat understandable they'd want to fire ASAP before they were in line of sight with it, but it is disappointing how quick they are to shoot.

And yeah the disconnect created by the computer monitor and joystick makes killing a lot easier.

baumer - 2010-04-05

how do you explain away 4:24

"We had a guy shooting."

was someone shooting at them, as they claimed?

fatatty - 2010-04-05

There's no evidence from the video that there is anyone firing at them. But that doesn't mean no one took fire before the film starts or from some angle we can't see.

It's a sad event but there's a lot more to it than crazy red neck soldiers out to kill some gooks. And yeah they're desensitized to death but crying soldiers don't win wars.

I'm not trying to explain it away, just state that war is murky and rarely black and white. There's a reason for the term "fog of war".

baumer - 2010-04-05

"We had a guy shooting and now he's behind the building."

Sure sounds like he's talking about the same guy we see around that time. Maybe they recognized him from his RPG!

fatatty - 2010-04-05

If they knowingly killed innocent people while fabricating a threat, then obviously it's horrifying and they should be punished severely. I just don't think that's the case. I hope that's not the case.

baumer - 2010-04-05

They did and it is but they won't. But we'll all forget about it by tomorrow so no need to get too worked up!

Keefu - 2010-04-05

There is a shorter video with Context and Annotations/Captions here, if you want it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rXPrfnU3G0

Keefu - 2010-04-05

I just put it under resubmit.

Gommorrah - 2010-04-05

vote this one up, it's the one i meant to link to in the first place

Cleaner82 - 2010-04-05

I think if you were to rub these air force pricks nose-first in a few of the corpses they make they might be a little more careful.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2010-04-05

The CO giving authorization sounds like he's barely out of high school.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2010-04-05

He sounds like some disembodied sky man who lacks the ability to say "no"

AmericanAir - 2010-04-05

HEARTS AND MINDS

badideasinaction - 2010-04-05

I don't know why, but I'm pretty sure of all the horror on this site, this video may have been the hardest one to watch.

Jesus. 5 stars if only to keep this visible on the pages for a little longer.

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-04-05

Any obligation I ever felt to respect the military and anyone in it is now dead.

Gojira1000 - 2010-04-05

Um, you mean to tell me some of you are surprised? This wasn't new in Hannibal's day, kiddies. Stars for the late wakeup call to the shocked.

memedumpster - 2010-04-05

Please don't lord over people the attainment of information. Education is not a weapon.

Simian Pride - 2010-04-06

Some of us hold the goddamn United States armed forces to a higher standard than a bunch of proto-muslims from classical antiquity.

Gojira1000 - 2010-04-07

There's your problem right there *adjusts ballcap and points at "higher standards" for people who kill other people for a living*

You might wanna replace that before you hit 100,000 miles.

(You need a military. A military will always act inhumanely in combat by its very nature. See Also Gen. Sherman. It's not nice or right -- it's how it is.)

Adham Nu'man - 2010-04-06

What a colossal fuck up...

wow...

StanleyPain - 2010-04-06

A lot of people keep saying "Gee, I don't know what I would have done in this situation" and I don't understand what's so complex about it. This isn't a group of soldiers caught in a fight for their lives in immediate, confused, crucial danger. This is calculated murder, and not even in a way where one can simply dismiss it as "oh well gee war sucks and people die." These are people who, under the best circumstances, are supposed to carefully identify military targets and take the appropriate course of action, not look for excuses to kill people for no reason. "Oh, it might have been a weapon." But it wasn't and being far away in a helicopter and therefore not at the most advantageous place to make judgments like this, erring on the side of caution would have been the prudent, true military thing to do.

rastarat - 2010-04-06

There are clearly two aks and an rpg in addition to the telephoto gear. This Apache was providing close air support and exterminated a group of insurgents who happen to have two photographers embedded with them.

Only shoot at armed men after you've confirmed by up close ground inspection that the weapons are real and loaded. By no means give yourself any advantage over them by using "technology" like helicopters.

"erring on the side of caution would have been the prudent, true military thing to do" umm actually killing anyone sporting an rpg as quickly as possible would be a very cautious and prudent.
