Ok, the following might sound ridiculous to the layman, but as a someone with a long-lasting and deep-seated fascination with the classical period, I'm forced to admit that Manowar's piece "Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts" remains one of the most impressive (at least lyrically) pop culture interpretations of a classical piece of literature, in this case the Iliad.
Skeptics should read the lyrics. They are very striking, especially if you are familiar with the source of inspiration.
