Damn. I wanted to hear the interview with the worker in the tent.

"Watcha doin?"
"Picking up junk."

TeenerTot
I saw a longer version of this. A local authority gets involved (briefly), asking the security guys questions about who they work for. They can't/won't answer. Then the reporter finally gets to a tent of workers (escorted by security) and all the workers refuse to be interviewed.
Perhaps they refuse because they've been threatened with job loss? Speculation, but plausible.

James Woods
BRITISH petroleum. Think about it.

jk, but apparently those limey bastards feel there is a lot of anti-british sentiment in American media coverage of The Gulf of Oil.
CornOnTheCabre
Well, duh.

If BP let the media cover the spill properly, everyone would see how badly they fucked it up.

You could always find lots of douchebags on Gulf Beaches, but now they get secret memos and feel like they've got authority and bullshit. Let's all create fake press passes and storm the beaches harder than Normandy. This is ridiculous.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeyit. A reporter from one of the Atlanta stations got arrested for "assault" for "grabbing a BP employee and turning him around."
mantang0
minus 2 stars because the reported is a pussy and didn't attempt to walk wherever the fuck he wanted on the public beach.
memedumpster
BP is proof there is no Batman, Zorro, Jesus, or Justice.
Lord Amazing
But all we really need is Aquaman.

5 stars for Evil.

Camonk
Don't be asinine. Zorro would be dead by now. Plus I think the Gulf is a little way outside of Batman's bailiwick. Jesus and Aquaman have no excuses.

Chancho
It's amazing how fast Americans surrender their authority to anyone without a beard and a turban.
SolRo
Few modern americans are even remotely aware of their rights, and most of the ones that do are either crazy or pretty douchey, so it's not cool to know your rights anymore.

THA SUGAH RAIN
I too can wear a polo shirt and yell at people on a beach.

"Employees are free to speak to the media" is compatible with "You can't interrupt our employees during work time." The reporter should have asked when the workers have their lunch.

Also, public areas can be closed off from time to time for upgrade or repair, depending on the danger the work requires (ie Closing a lane of traffic on a public road for roadworks). A good reporter would be asking the local council what requirements they gave BP to work under in this instance.

Of course, all this would require a proper journalist...
Wander
Oh fuck you, that worker WAS on break, and if you're not stupid you know that it doesn't matter. Those guys would not have let that reporter go anywhere.

kamlem
I imagine so, but if the guy had stood back till lunchtime and made a call to the council this could have been a real story instead of a media beatup.

I would say from looking at that beach that the "security guard" is talking out of his ass. Still, it would be nice for the reporter to do his job and let us know.

Anaxagoras
He did do his job, dumbass. Why do you think a "call to the council" would immediately & clearly reveal shocking malfeasance? Public officials are fully capable of giving people the run-around.

That reporter did a fine job of investigating & reporting the news item here: BP is full of shit.

But hey.. call the council! They'll be sure to answer our questions in embarrassing detail!

kamlem
So the government agency that authorised the cleanup and the conditions under which it is to be performed is in cahoots with BP in some overarching conspiracy? This reporter is missing out on one hell of a story!

Jet Bin Fever
If you saw these guys "working" you'd know that they spend about 90% of their day sitting around just looking at stuff... assessing the situation if you will. It's really sad.

Wander
Kamlem, yes, that is exactly it. Thanks for understanding!

Anaxagoras
Kamlen, the "conspiracy theory" that you outline has already been reported on by several reporters: the local authorities in many different locations are working with BP in order to help minimize the PR disaster for BP. I'm not 100% clear on what the local authorities are getting out of it, but it has been happening. A lot.

This reporter was giving us a different story... a new one: BP is full of shit. And he did a good job of investigating that story & demonstrating its truth. If he had pursued the story that you wanted him to, he would have been walking in the footsteps of other journalists & given us a rehash of old news. Instead, he chose to do his job & find a new story.

FABIO
So we just assume the outcome of a course of action he didn't try? It was too hard to show what going to the council would do?

Who let all the conspiracy theorists in here? This is the corporate version of the "fuck all cops" people here.
