Not entirely shocking, WBC is so extremist and hardline that any deviation from the gay bashing would be grounds for expulsion.

I wish the world was able to ignore these yahoos. Or blow them up.

Okay, here's my five stars for unqualified evil.
Quad9Damage - 2010-07-06
Could've done without the last thirty seconds, but 5 stars because Fred Phelps should be eaten by bears. It's heart-breaking and scary to see small children so easily indoctrinated into this wretched cult.
Teased Vagina - 2010-07-06
5 for evil - in the shots of the sermons there are at least twice as many people as I expected there to be. Is the family just THAT big?
Teased Vagina - 2010-07-06 I also wonder about this girl's parents. The mother looks like the rest of the Phelps women so I'm guessing she's a daughter, but does that mean her husband married into this insanity voluntarily? Or are they literally brother and sister?
dead_cat - 2010-07-07 I heard he originally contacted the Phelps in order to make a documentary about them, and that after getting started on the project he decided he liked their brand of koolaid.

badideasinaction - 2010-07-06
I'm confused... this isn't a Beavis and Butthead video. It's... actually evil. Has poetv finally come back?
Camonk - 2010-07-06 Oh, so YOU'RE why my whiny douchebag alarm was going off. I was wondering.
badideasinaction - 2010-07-06 Jesus folks, it's poetv, be glad someone isn't asking if it's okay to masturbate to it.

AfricanScience - 2010-07-19 Free speech for all (unless it's speech I don't agree with)!

That guy - 2010-08-29 Good point....
....grmbrfrr....
I'm saying I'm ready to give up free speech if I can take WBC down with me.

Quad9Damage - 2010-07-06
Why does the brainwashing continue to spread around this family like a virus, even though Fred Sr. is old and decrepit and can no longer subject them to horrible abuse? Am I missing something here? Why do they just blindly pass down the indoctrination to their children and grandchildren instead of turning their back on the old fart? Is there a point where it will ever stop?
pastorofmuppets - 2010-07-06 From what I can tell, rites of passage generally boil down to some abuse that someone goes through, followed by a rationalization on their part that it was worth it.
Combine that with the fact that the quickest way to stop being the new guy is to find a new new guy to haze.

Ghoul - 2010-07-06
There is nothing shocking about this. There is no depth to the WBC's perversion. Did anyone honestly expect them to tolerate dissent amongst their own ranks?
ashtar. - 2010-07-06
Good lord. They kicked their 24 year old daughter out of their house? Those horrible people.
They probably just wanted to be able to get in the bathroom in the morning without waiting a hour for her to fix her hair, so they made up an excuse to get her to move out.
Quad9Damage - 2010-07-06 I think you're missing the point here. They didn't just kick her out of the house. They completely cut her off from the family, and instructed the children to hate and dismiss her. That's several levels beyond pushing someone out of the nest.
dead_cat - 2010-07-07 They're regressively "traditional". She would most likely have lived with them until she got married, if she hadn't been kicked out. Otherwise she might have had time to have an independent thought. Or talk to boys. Or masturbate.

Atrekis - 2010-07-06
Lauren Drain is awesome.
One of god's elect? Figures that they're Calvinists.
cognitivedissonance - 2010-07-06 Their Calvinism is actually a reason WHY they're Baptists. I grew up as a Baptist and these guys started making the rounds just as I started questioning my faith.
Baptists aren't actually Calvinist, that's one of their prime definitions. They actually believe that once you receive salvation, it's impossible to lose it do to individual sin afterwards, because otherwise the Judaic sacrifices of the Old Testament would still be just as good as a solution. By traditional Baptist belief, you can basically do literally ANYTHING after salvation and still go to heaven... you have to explain to God why you did that, but he has to let you in.
When I started asking why the church allows these people to call themselves "Baptist", the answer I received was pretty defining to my youth: the Baptists were founded specifically WITHOUT any internal hierarchy outside of the individual congregation. So, they wouldn't be welcome in most Baptist churches, but because there's no "head" Baptist, they can't refuse them the right to call themselves that. It was actually the core founding principle BEHIND the sect. If the non-WBC Baptists tried to take away their title of "Baptist Church", they themselves would cease to be Baptists and would become something else.
I'm a Catholic now.

I don't even see the point of worshipping a god who is a jerk. I mean I know that they are actually the jerks, but damn. Maybe Jesus should put out a press release.

Hailey2006 - 2010-07-06
I totally hope Paul and/or Yoko sue them for the "Hey Jude" parody!
If God hates the entire world, doesn't that include these freaks, too?

Getting kick out of that family sounds like a positive thing to me. Maybe she can finally build a healthy non-crazy life.

I can't wait to picket Fred's funeral.
Scynne - 2010-07-06
This church is such a bizarre paradox of ultra-conservative and modernist theology. It seems like they just cut and pasted from several diametrically opposed confessions of faith, and started following it.
Also: I can't help wondering if the apostate daughter has gone full-out athiest, or if she still attends church etc.
Monkey Napoleon - 2010-07-06 In a very real sense, these people are the most true-to-bible sect of christianity I know of. Anyone LESS conservative is picking out the parts they find distasteful.
pastorofmuppets - 2010-07-06 In the Gospels, Jesus makes a point of breaking some OT laws and challenging others. He even goes so far as to recast the ten commandments into two. WBC may be acting Christian in the sense that what they do is reminiscent of early Reformation-era zealotry, but they're pretty un-Christian in that they would have picketed Jesus's crucifixion, given the chance.
While I generally dislike it when people aren't critical enough of their own religion to at least look up the more brutal passages in their scripture and form an honest opinion of them, I think it's unfair to consider WBC to be model Christians. They're basically animals.
Scynne - 2010-07-06 There are some aspects they have down very well, but WBC is picking out the parts they find distasteful just as much as the fuzzy-wuzzy Christians are.
twinkieafternoon - 2010-07-06
I mean, we allowed that lip piercing to go, and that was as hard as anything else we know the Lord had to forgive her for.
I'm reminded of the David Cross "Promise Keepers" bit about lies and and bullshit and rhetoric.
