I loved these things as a kid. Finding a dead one in good condition was always neat. I've seen male hummingbirds chase them away from flowers.

Male hummingbirds tend to be shinier? I don't know if it's the same for all species, but there is some pretty pronounced sexual dimorphism in all the hummingbirds I've seen.
