America the Beautiful
It's actually a Sicilian tradition. There are only two of these competitions in the world, one in Sicily and one in Gloucester. Sicilian champions sometimes travel to Gloucester to compete and vice versa. The whole St. Peter's Fiesta is amazing, although between the economy and kids not going outside as much as they did a decade ago, it's not quite what it used to be. But still, there are definitely thousands of people at this, if not the tens of thousands it sometimes gets.
*Sigh* That wasn't supposed to be a comment.

A friend of mine is a raving Italian. He fond of saying "The Sicilians introduced us to sex, we introduced them to Women".
Not quite sure what that says about Italians, but watching a bunch of dudes ride a greased pole in drag raises some questions about the Sicilians.
I know a guy who is full-blooded Sicilian, both parents are immigrants, his mother doesn't even speak English, and it still took him two years of rejection before they let him run the greasy pole because he wasn't considered Sicilian enough.
If I recall correctly, this was a disappointingly short competition. Usually it takes at least two or three rounds before someone wins, but at either this or the '06 one the flag went down just a few runners into round two, which meant the whole affair was over in about half an hour.
I think it was because Jo-Jo Sanfilipo didn't like him.
Much better muted.
AC/DC is idiomatically appropriate for anything Gloucester.
