Sigh* poor Deadpool.

Xenocide - 2010-11-19

In blackest night, in brightest day,
the GL oath is kinda gay
read silently it makes you proud,
but sounds retarded said aloud
unless your acting skill's divine
do not even attempt said line!

Ursa_minor - 2010-11-19

Well, this definitely doesn't look bad at all. No way.

Sanest Man Alive - 2010-11-19

Ryan fucking Reynolds? Really?

mashedtater - 2010-11-19

could have been that guy who plays stifler in american pie

memedumpster - 2010-11-19

I guess they couldn't get Michael Cera and remembered Reynolds has no standards.

StanleyPain - 2010-11-19

I'm honestly and earnestly surprised they're keeping the general look of the comics, the characters, and the villains pretty accurate to the source. It seems like nowdays they always want to "reenvision" shit and make it all GRITTY AND EDGY.

Rape Van Winkle - 2010-11-19

They retconned the personality.

As a kid watching superfriends, I always thought Green Lantern would be cooler, if he was really goofy and irresponsible and had an annoying voice and a stupid friend.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2010-11-19

Iron Man sold really well, let's make our protagonist exactly like Tony Stark only without the charisma!

Stopheles - 2010-11-19

Also, Venom was (ahem) so successful in SPIDER-MAN 3, so let's make Green Lantern look like he's wearing a suit made of moldy steak!

StanleyPain - 2010-11-20

I was referring to the character designs, not the substance of the movie itself. I was surprised the costumes and such were left so comic-book-y without being somehow fucked up in the process.

Lurchi - 2010-11-19

fuck it

Nikon - 2010-11-19

Not sure if want.

kingarthur - 2010-11-19

Uh....okay, I'll probably see it as I'm a lifelong fan of pretty much all the Green Lanterns but the "dudeness" of this is painful.

Also, if they include that "every color in ROYGBIV has a mood/power/ring" bullshit, I'm gonna seriously throw things.

kingarthur - 2010-11-19

Also, showing my inner geek here, but was Ben Browder or Nathan Fillion just too old to play Hal Jordan or what? They'd have been perfect.

Bort - 2010-11-19

The thing they get wrong too often in comic book movies is, they forget to give the viewer a reason to care about the hero. The audience needs to be able to identify with the protagonist and want him to succeed, but also to understand why he takes on the strictly voluntary and borderline suicidal role of superhero.

That might -- might -- be something this movie gets right, if I read too much into this trailer. Hal as a cocky thrill-seeker suddenly realizing that he's got responsibilities because of his potential, and having to man up and face down evil simply because he's the only person who can ... that could work.

Hal's buddy doesn't appear to be an Eskimo or a Venusian.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2010-11-19

What is it with comic book dorks and Nathan Fillion? He's like this decade's Bruce Campbell.

Xenocide - 2010-11-19

This was why I thought Iron Man was the best non-bat-related superhero movie of the past ten years: they went out of their way to establish Tony Stark as a character with believable motives first, and the superhero thing was always just an extension of that. If they can pull this off with Hal, I'll give them a puppy and a nice hallmark card reading "I forgive you for not using Kyle."

freedoom - 2010-11-19

kingarthur, i always thought Ben Browder would make a perfect Booster Gold.

Bort - 2010-11-19

I am probably the only person on earth who didn't like the first "Superman" movie except for one part: the section in Smallville with Jonathan Kent. That was the only part of the movie where we saw Clark wrestling with the questions and issues we all would if we were born with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men: why NOT use them the same way anyone else uses their inborn abilities? And Jonathan's answer -- that whatever you were put on earth to do, it will be something greater than your own personal benefit -- really set the tone of why Clark would grow up to be Superman.

They couldn't really use Kyle because he's defined in terms of Hal: he's Hal's replacement, he's not as inherently fearless as Hal, he's less inclined to go loopy than Hal, he can fit more girlfriends in his refrigerator than Hal, and so on.

Bort - 2010-11-19

Shoulda been a reply to Xenocide, sorry.

The other direction they could have gone was a WWII Alan Scott movie -- young guy finds a magic ring and has to fight a savage Solomon Grundy (the product of Nazi attempts at bringing the dead back to life) -- but then everyone would have been asking where Sinestro is.

paranex - 2010-11-19

No no no Bort -- Denzel Washington as John Stewart (but basically just reprising his role in "Man on Fire"). THAT would make up for the fact this is going to be two hours of crappy CGI in 3D.

Personally, I think Reynolds kind of fits with the character. Hal Jordan was a douche.

Xenocide - 2010-11-19

I can't agree that Kyle is just a replacement for Hal, even if that's why he was created. He was blessed with some excellent writers who evolved him past that fairly quickly.

Kyle is really more like a less neurotic Peter Parker. Slightly dopey, but more down-to-earth and relatable than a hotshot test pilot. I like the idea of someone who on the surface seems like the least qualified person on Earth to be a superhero -- an anonymous starving artist in a city filled with them -- being suddenly given responsibility over entire solar systems.

This is the part where I make a self-deprecating comment about beards in order to preemptively deflect mockery from other posters.

Bort - 2010-11-19

I'm the most likely beard-mockery target here, so you're safe.

I will agree that Kyle has stepped out of Hal's spotlight, though I would say it was only possible after Hal returned. Prior to that, even when Kyle would kick almighty ass, there was always an undercurrent of "wow, even Hal might not have been able to do that", followed by a patronizing talk by Superman or someone about "you're starting to get the hang of this, kid". Now that Hal is around doing Hal things, Kyle has the opportunity to do Kyle things without comparisons being quite so inevitable.

Movie-wise, I suppose you could have Abin Sur give his ring to Kyle, and non-nerds wouldn't know the difference. But we nerds would, and we would say that the character was at best half Kyle and half Hal, if not Hal under a different name.

Bort - 2010-11-19

Durr, people step out from under shadows, not spotlights. I guess I'm not ready to have a serious conversation about Green Lantern.

Hammer Falls - 2010-11-19

Looks like DC now has their version of Marvel's Fantastic Four movies.

Squidmojo - 2010-11-19

Was Elektra marvel's version of DC's Catwoman movie?

Hammer Falls - 2010-11-20

CharlesSmith - 2010-11-19

I like both Ryan Reynolds and Green Lantern. I want nothing to do with whatever the hell that's supposed to be.

Also I am impressed by how hard they tried to make their phoned-in CGI look like a Green Lantern comic. Kudos on the wasted effort guys.

oddeye - 2010-11-19

I don't like comic books. I don't like movies based on books or even other movies.

Am I alone in wanting a movie to be a completely unique and original entity?

Hammer Falls - 2010-11-20

No, but you will be forever wanting.

deadpan - 2010-11-19

It's just the setup for the inevitable Green Lantern/Green Arrow bromance directed by Judd Apatow or Todd Philips or any of those talentless hacks.

themilkshark - 2010-11-19

With the exception of the Green Lantern suit appearing to be some sort of second skin, I like just about everything in this trailer.

Riskbreaker - 2010-11-19

Oh, btw, this one also has four writers, which credits as writers include:

Dawnson's Creek
Law and Order
A harry potter movie
CSI: Miami

Also, the guy who wrote Call of Duty 3 and Perfect Dark Zero.
