Jet Bin Fever - 2011-01-25
I see Jon's point, but I still don't think two wrongs makes a right. Neither side should make ridiculous claims, though I do see a serious imbalance in the sheer number of these claims on one side versus the other.
Also, the Nazi card is so overused that it is almost meaningless. Lets start calling people with different views something else hateful like Spanish Inquisitors or Apartheid Afrikaners or something.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-01-25 no no, I'm saying that both sides of the aisle were wrong for evoking "nazi." I don't think Jon was defending him, but I think his writers should've put more emphasis on showing both sides using the same name-calling, even if Fox News is so deliciously full of clips to choose from.

SolRo - 2011-01-25 Just watch the show or shut up.
This particular segment is about Fox and this commentator lying. Stewart does plenty of other segments calling other people out, left and right, for using trumped up rhetoric.

FABIO - 2011-01-25 If I was one of the hundreds of millions of people who suffered through the most devastating war in history, whether it be by combat, genocide, or mass scale strategic bombing of civilian centers, when it was finally over and everyone on the planet thought "Never again",
I'm not sure which would piss me off more: pundits misusing the term Nazi to further an agenda, or shrill cynics saying we're not allowed to learn from history anymore because it's "played out".

Stewart probably could have found republican senators and house members who say the same dumb crap but instead went after the media's portrayal... and Karl Rove's. But the point stands that if he wanted to do this piece he should have gone after other politicians.

|
jangbones - 2011-01-25 Megyn Kelly denied that Fox hosts compared liberals to Nazi's.
Stewart then showed repeated examples of Fox hosts comparing liberals to Nazi's.
How do you not understand this?
|
PegLegPete - 2011-01-25 Look I agree with Stewart, hypocrisy runs rampant, and yes, he correctly debunked Megyn's claim. I agree with a lot of his politics too. My criticism is that the segment would have been more effective if he focused on Republicans - someone from the opposite end of the political spectrum - in government using the same type of analogy. It would expose that "both parties do it, and no one approves" instead of just "look how fucking retarded the media is". If he had showed that both political parties cry nazi, and then done the Megyn evisceration, it would have been more on point.

I love this clip.

So, here's what liberals should take from this clip. Nobody who thinks Fox News is great is going to be persuaded by Stewart's arguments. The people who already watch his show are just going to say "He's right, Fox News is terrible" and nobody's opinions or actions are going to change. Fox News will continue to call liberals Nazis while taking offense when liberals do the same to them. That's why liberals like Stewart shouldn't be upset when Democrats use Republican tactics. Refusing to engage in the game is like unilateral disarmament; the Republicans obviously aren't going to play nice now or most likely ever again.

dek863 - 2011-01-26 What I took from this clip is that it was funny.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2011-01-26
Saying that politicians lie and distort the truth in a way that recalls the Nazis is not the same thing as calling them Nazis. Nazis are most known for mechanized assembly-line genocide first, propaganda second. The right wing noise machine is known for propaganda. If the representative (or was he a senator? I don't remember), had evoked Machiavelli, no one would have thought that he was saying that Republicans are monarchists.
And being a media critic in a time when the media is serving us so very poorly is Jon Stewart's primary function.

Here's the way it works. Someone says something on TV that is demonstrably untrue, The Daily show staff catches it, and runs a whole shitload of clips showing how outrageous it is. The process is guided by events, not by an editorial agenda. It's simple cause and effect.
