My grandparents, who were born 20 years earlier, had trouble even accepting my sister's mixed-race marriage, even though my brother-in-law was himself the product of a mixed-race marriage.

I never did ask either of them how they felt about gay marriage before they died. I know that my grandmother was completely oblivious to the existence of lesbians entirely (for example, the committed lesbian couple down the street from her were just friends and it was "so sad that they don't get paid enough that they can afford to live in their own homes").

Obviously, this woman's desire for her son to be treated with dignity is merely symptomatic of her own selfishness.

By the same token, only people who don't know anyone at all who's gay can legitimately support gay marriage.

Or maybe if there's a gay guy they really hate. Then I think it counts double.

Well her entire story is about how having a gay son made her overcome her prejudices and realize homosexuality is ok.

...so its almost like she's implying that having a gay son made her become this open-minded.

And then she asks people to imagine the possibility that their kids might be gay and ask themselves whether they love their kids more than they hate homosexuality.

So maybe you didn't actually listen to her?
