Yeah, I agree with you. I think there are always flashy targets to pick on in any religion, but the fact is that religions exist because they essentially work, even if this could be just a placebo type effect. I'd rather have a world where people feel accountable to something other than themselves, whether its their family, the state, or God. Preferably a combination of them.
