They're not dupes who got 'tricked' into believing. They chose to live in their preferred reality, and that reality involved themselves are superior beings who enjoy eternal happiness while all others (including good people) suffer an eternity of torment.

Irish: it could go either way. If you were born to Rapture-believing parents, you may well have been so spooked into it that you're a victim more than an instigator. Of course, what you then teach your own children becomes yet another issue.

I don't know if you've noticed this Irish, but In my posting's I am pretty lenient on judging people by their religious beliefs. Its hard to break the programming. I know very intelligent people, who just on how they were raised will never question their beliefs.
I find it funny you bring up all those people on their way to hell, because in my case that thought is what spread the first seeds of doubt in my mind about my Christian upbringing. I'd argue with Christian friends that the billion plus Chinese shouldn't burn just for being born in Shanghai as opposed to Memphis. They callously would say, "but the Bible says you must know Christ to be saved."

I agree with you both, and my statement was harsh, but at the same time I think its worth remembering that we hold people responsible for their thoughts and actions as adults all the time, whether it's a result of environment or religion.

In some of the interviews many followers do come across like victims in a Ponzi scheme, fooling themselves out of desperation to escape their troubled lives. And I believe Camping was a deliberate scammer who conned millions of dollars, as indicated by the fact that the group is now just going about business as usual, pretending nothing happened. I'm sure in a few years they'll try the same thing again, always with a date between a few months and a year or two, far away enough to build money and followers, yet close enough to scare people.

They're saying the next Rapture will be in October which is a surprisingly fast turn around for these things.

I like to use apocalyptic language like that to joke about how absurd certain parts of our culture are also.
