I had an Action Max and this "game" -- not as a substitute for any other gaming system, but because my mom had no problem buying every gaming system that came out.

The black circle in the lower right hand side is where you placed a red spinning light on a suction cup that would activate with each "hit." The console itself had two LED counters to keep track of both lightguns score (the lightguns themselves were not removable from the console, so every game, including Sonic Fury, a Top Gun rip-off, involved you shooting pistols at airplanes.)

So, prior to that, whenever I heard other kids talking about playing video games I always assumed they were talking about the thing I had and wondered how they did all the cool stuff they were talking about with just guns (?!).
This led to my mom asking the guy at the game shop for Mortal Kombat on the Action Max. I guess it took a while for the feeling of being ridiculed to pass, explaining my own late re-entry into the console market.
I wonder if there's an Action Max Emulator?
