The new Brian Eno record is really coming together.

Raggamuffin - 2011-07-13

I'd also like to take exception to that "Fondly Remembered: Web 1.0" bit.

OgreMkIV - 2011-07-13

The spice must flow.

I liked how you could tell your connection speed after listening to the dial-up long enough.

Billy the Poet - 2011-07-15

I was gonna go with Sigur Ros.

Valvados - 2011-07-13

Twenty times more compelling than any Milton Babbitt piece.

Rach_and_Roll - 2011-07-19

These are for you, Valvados. Just take them.

oddeye - 2011-07-13

My child will never have to experience the horror of dial-up, thank god.

BHWW - 2011-07-13

Though broadband is annoying...I recall pages loading faster back in my 56k modem days because they didn't load like 150 items, and Flash ads from 35 domains just to display a news article or something.

Noscript and adblock plus are about the greatest things since the wheel.

Cena_mark - 2011-07-13

The old dial up sounds brings back memories to when I first began making friends online.

pressed peanut sweepings - 2011-07-13

Spawned copy of Diablo 1 barely chugging along on my 486-66

Mancakes - 2011-07-13

I have no nostalgia for you dialup. Fuck you in the face, you slow unreliable piece of shit.

deadpan - 2011-07-13

I don't have any real nostalgia for dial up handshaking since so many nerds think it's a perfect ironic ringtone.

Now the whirrs and thunks of an old Apple ImageWriter II, that takes me back...

SixDigitDebt - 2011-07-13

I remember buying a 2400 bps internal and going, "ZOMG."

:D

memedumpster - 2011-07-13

Back before cable companies sought our complete subjugation as slaves.

*tear*

kingofthenothing - 2011-07-14

The sad thing about the dial-up sound is that it was, at least in later operating systems, entirely optional. You could turn it off. "Off" should have been the fucking standard option, instead of "root around in the control panel somewhere and unclick some box to make the awful screech go away." Nobody ever heard that shit and said "that sounds like music to my ears."

Which makes me think computer people are just misanthropes who all have a little "bastard operator from hell" in them.

Syd Midnight - 2011-07-15

NO CARRIER

Simillion - 2011-07-15

I wonder why this is so nostalgic: ancient sound patterns deeply rooted among my childhood-formed neuronal dendrites, or because somebody figured out how cool this sounds and used it in a game/film soundtrack...
