This woman was the Town Clerk of a town in my county, here in New York. What this woman says is quite clear, she refuses to uphold the law of the land. She only worked as Clerk to get on the government dole here, a nice cushy position with exorbitant benefits... benefits her and her self-employed husband would otherwise have to pay an arm-and-a-leg for. As far as her claims of needing a referendum to be held to decide the state's position on marriage equality, she makes herself look entirely ignorant, especially for a clerk, of the state's constitution, which holds no provisions for referendum.

She subsequently resigned in disgrace. An oathbreaker.

Oh yeah, and she looks a lot like a lesbian.

I'd ask what would happen if she decided she didn't want to issue licences for interracial couples (because the white majority should have a referendum to determine what rights blacks are allowed), but it's not even a hypothetical. That literally happened just a few months ago in Louisiana.

It's really common for people to do work for clients even when they disagree with their goals or lifestyle, or have to enforce laws they disagree with. Why does she shouldn't have to be as professional as lawyers, doctors, designers, engineers, accountants, police officers, and every other type of government official?

I am a Japanese-American and I come from a long line of forge-men. My great-grandfather shoed horses and made nails. My grandfather owned a small ironworks and my father inherited it when grandfather died. Like most Japanese, we keep a household shrine and because of the family business, we pay special homage to Kagu-Tsuchi, the god of forge and fire. Some people--my sister included--think the practice is silly and superstitious, but it means a lot to the rest of us. A foundry is a dangerous place to work and Kagu-Tsuchi watches out for father. He watches out for me too, though I don't work with iron. Kagu-Tsuchi led me down a different path.

I’m a firefighter.

I love my job. It's very fulfilling. Just last month, I helped evacuate a warehouse after a big tank of chlorine gas ruptured. Chlorine exposure is nasty and often fatal, but I'm trained to deal with it. My crew pulled three people out of that warehouse, people who otherwise would have died, and we did it quickly and professionally. Yet despite the risks I’ve taken and the lives I’ve saved, the department fired me today because of one minor incident involving my faith.

You see, I’m a diligent firefighter, but there is one duty Kagu-Tsuchi won’t allow me to perform: namely, fighting fires.

Kagu-Tsuchi, protector of my ancestors, is the Lord of all fires, even those that start “accidentally.” If he wanted a tenement on 45th to burn, who am I to second guess the being that bestowed the gift of light on mankind? Yes, people died and yes, some kids are badly burned, but it's all Kagu-Tsuchi’s will. I performed what first aid I could after the fact, but turning a hose on those flames would have violated my deepest-held beliefs. Beliefs that are protected by law in this country.

It’s like these poor pharmacists. They are only following orders from on high when they refuse to dispense abortion pills. Their Bible says “Thou shall not kill” just like Kagu-Tsuchi tells me not to interfere with his beautiful creations. It’s just not a big deal. I mean, someone will fill those women’s prescriptions. If not, then we can only assume the Christian God wants them pregnant, right?

Naturally, I’ve filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the City of New York and fully expect to win. I don’t want money; I just want my job back. I want to save people’s lives again.

Unless they’re on fire.

Should anyone who considers themselves a Christian/Jew/Muslim/Buddhist/Hindu/Etc first and an American second be considered a traitor?

You work in a government job. The constitution promises the seperation of church and state. So by saying your religious beliefs influence your government job aren't you being unconstitutionnal?

I mean the state's not saying you can't practice your religious right to worship Jesus, they just want you to issue a form that says the government recognizes the marriage, not that your idea of god recognizes it.

Donating money to people so they don't have to do their job sounds a lot like socialism, lady.

It doesn't say "Don't allow gay people to get married." anywhere in the Bible. I know for a fact that it doesn't. It does, however, say "Submit yourself to every ordinance of man . . . to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors." - 1 Peter 2:13

These people who try to use religion as an excuse to perpetrate bigotry and deny others their legal rights are really creating a bad image for religious people in general.

Help her protect her religious freedom....

...which includes her right to inflict her religion on others, apparently.

If you can't perform the duties of your station because of your religion, get a new job. Simple as that.
