Does anyone know about singing with any real expertise? Do their voices fail to carry because they're such obvious bundles of nerves or is it just like that regardless?

Yes. All head voice with no chest voice is how you create the most unemployable singer possible. The girls' vocal coach is not a day under eighty and believes this is the only way to sing.
