Good thing there wasn't a hostage crisis on or anything.

"Their own embelishments of Star Trek lore."

How much slash did Hugh read when preparing this report?

"I grew up wanting to be an astronaut..."
but painting oneself green for a movie premiere is ambitious enough.

I'm close to alone in believing the first ST film is the best thing to emerge from the franchise. It had style, mystery, sexuality, optical effects, and a great soundtrack lacking in all that followed.

It didn't have a decent antagonist to keep people interested though, which is why most people prefer Star Trek II. Also the same problem with most Superman movies.

It tried to be too many things for too many disparate subdivisions of the science fiction subculture. Plus, by the time it had come out, the tastes for science fiction had splintered into the fantasy side of Star Wars, the dystopic horror of Aliens and the goofy New Agey-ness of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's a wonder it didn't have talking apes.
