I think this was a situation where someone thought they were trying to be really high concept and wound up back on the low side of the graph.
If by "Leela" you meant "Sarah Jane Smith"...but Leela was up there for obvious reasons...

Rovin - 2012-02-15 Leela wore tiny outfits, but Leela was so against Doctor Who rules that it made the actual character interesting. Bloodthirsty, primitive, and homicidal.

sosage - 2012-02-15 I agree. Leela is like a Frazzetta character pasted into the stories...and it was well done. I thought they got rid of her too early.
But Sarah Jane Smith was the ultimate audience injector. There were other characters that took over the role of naive, every day person thrown into these weird adventures...but Sarah Jane Smith had the most charming sense of innocence and had great chemistry.
Ace is interesting as well, but my face is starting to itch. It's really annoying me and I can't concentrate on writing about her...OMG...Beard...Beard is...Neck Beard...overgrowing...sentient...choking me!....*
