It's nice that for once since this is based on a comic, a mashup like this gets to be totally canon. I'm not sure I know what to think about military archer Hawkeye without a beard though.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-03-01

They probably felt it was a little too poncy.

SolRo - 2012-03-01

Who the hell recruited him? He's a schmuck with a bow in a group full of people with superpowers and/or ultra powerful technology.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-03-01

What powers or tech does Black Widow have, Sol? Being sexy doesn't count (since every superheroine is that, pretty much). Comic book archers and gun-bunnies need other superheroes to sort of fit in. Otherwise, they're mere weapons fetishists or homicidal maniacs.

That said, I'm looking forward to this movie for Robert Downey Jr., if nothing else. I do wish they'd kept Captain America's outfit more like the WWII version or the one from The Ultimates.

TheJollyDodger - 2012-03-01

That "schmuck" could dot both of your eyes with his bow at 1000 yards before you could blink and lets not forget that those arrows should contain some rather interesting effects, from incendiary to high explosives. He is friggen John Rambo but without the speech impediment.

Xenocide - 2012-03-01

This is true, but let's be fair. Hawkeye has always been kind of a schmuck. That's what makes him fun.

Bootymarch - 2012-03-01

Plus he's got that sick DHC.

Comic books are stupid.

I am a nerd who liked Firefly and almost enjoyed Thor so I will probably see this if I can rope my buddy into going.

mouser - 2012-03-01

«How desperate are you» sums up this movie pretty well.

TeenerTot - 2012-03-01

I think it looks like fun.

Squeamish - 2012-03-01

This looks like an utterly stupid, mindless, special effects-filled actionfest designed to appeal to manchildren.

I am going to love the HELL out of this movie.

Also: yay thor wooo

TeenerTot - 2012-03-01

Thor, indeed. I hope he walks around shirtless again.

Spit Spingola - 2012-03-01

I want a Superfriends movie with the Wondertwins dammit.

memedumpster - 2012-03-01

"Hulk constipated, nnnnnnNNNGGHHH!!!!"

Didn't click play, amused enough by preload.

chumbucket - 2012-03-01

If movie ticket prices go up to this is basically the only film that would warrant it.

Xenocide - 2012-03-01

And there came a day unlike any other, when the Marvel Studios executives had finally run out of decent superheroes to repackage into a movie. On that day The Avengers were born: because there's no need for new ideas when you can just put all of your old ones in a room together!

Monkey Napoleon - 2012-03-01

You knew that the entire production and release schedule for all the Marvel movies, including this one, has been planned out since the first Spiderman movie made about a kajillion dollars, right?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-03-01

Xeno? Marvel's been on the continuity bandwagon for a while, now. While the Hulk movies faltered, the others (Thor, Iron Man, Captain America) were all basically prequels to this film, and they were planned that way. You're also aware that there is such a comic as "The Avengers?" More of this movie comes from the popularity of "The Ultimates," but it's still nowhere near what you're proposing.

It's gotten so I don't care for the DC films as much because they seem so comparatively meaningless, since they'll just get rebooted by the next director anyway.

Xenocide - 2012-03-01

Well, that's an odd double standard, considering that the new Spider-Man film is a reboot, and so is the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. And Punisher has a THIRD reboot in pre-production, plus a TV pilot that is also a reboot.

Meanwhile, the only film property DC has ever rebooted is Batman (and thank God for that.) Even Superman Returns was shoehorned into the canon of the Christopher Reeve movies. Which was a terrible idea, but still.

It's a little sad that we've reached the point where people think movies are "comparatively meaningless" unless they're all tied together in some huge clusterfuck of sequels and cross-marketing. Stories and characters that get passed around from director to director at the whim of a production company, with no clear arc or end in sight: that feels a lot more meaningless to me.

Part of the reason I'm looking forward to Dark Knight Rises is because it is quite explicitly the end of that narrative. It feels like someone is trying to tell me a story, not sell me an action figure.

Hooker - 2012-03-01

Yeah. I've never been a comic book fan and I don't understand the strong desire for continuity. Marvel and DC movies seem to follow my admittedly limited knowledge of Marvel and DC comics: Marvel movies seem to have the hand of the producer in everything making sure that people get what they expect, leading to generally bland, inoffensive material that isn't never bad, but prevented from being great, while DC has no standards whatsoever, leading to things as wonderful as the Nolan Batman series and as dreadful as the Singer Superman series.

pastorofmuppets - 2012-03-01

Also endlessly rebooted and re-envisioned: comic books

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-03-02

Again, Xeno, you need to do your research.

Spider-Man's film rights aren't currently with Marvel/Disney. They were licensed out along with the Fantastic Four and the X-Men franchises. Until the studios with those rights let them go (that is, not make a movie in a given allotment of time), Marvel/Disney can't include them in their films.

And Batman is the only reboot? Someone better tell the people working on "The Man of Steel," then.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2021-09-30

Yeah, I highly doubt this "Avengers" malarkey is going anywhere

Gojira1000 - 2012-03-01

I hate to be 5-starring a shameless ad for the removal of my disposable income but .... they can have it.

Riskbreaker - 2012-03-01

Call me when they make the next Punisher movie.

That guy - 2012-03-01

10 stars of shit in a 5 star rating.

In fairness, it should be said that I like movies that are not about heroes saving the world over and over and over and over and over and over again, and then win their immortality on fast-food soft drink cups because I am a boring, grown-up, brainy snob who is completely right.

That guy - 2012-03-01

"win" -> "winning"

themilkshark - 2012-03-01

This movie was about 12 years in the making. We can thank Sam Raimi and his green Power Ranger goblin for this, it was his huge box office take that made superheroes filmable.

poorwill - 2012-03-01

I thought Raimi's Spider-Man films were pretty lousy (the first two anyway, didn't see the third one but it's probably awesome because everybody who liked the first two hated it).

Robin Kestrel - 2012-03-01

Meh.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2012-03-01

Joss Whedon: Able to take a summer blockbuster with a budget in the hundreds of millions and still make it look like a TV show.

The lighting and blocking is atrocious.

Old_Zircon - 2012-03-02

Video games are looking pretty good these days!

Maru - 2012-03-02

stinkeroo

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-03-03

I CAN'T MOVE!

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-10-11

I love how literally every time someone posts a trailer to something that, in hindsight, turns out to be universally beloved, PoETV rolls its eyes and says "Ugh, this is SO beneath me."

If someone posted a trailer to the Sermon on the Mount, half the posters here would say "Overrated. Nowhere near as good as Planescape: Torment."

Nominal - 2019-12-01

90% of SDC's comments here were IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS of how disgusted he was with poetv's pop culture tastes.

You live for nothing but to be a cunty cunt. Go to the same bonews craphole WHOWANTSDESERT cunted off to.

Cunt

Nominal - 2019-12-01

"universally beloved"

Joss Whedon is atrocious. His brand of dialog ruined movies for a good decade or more.
