Seems like she coulda just turned to the loser and said, "Really? You're going to sexually harass me? You? Let me clear something up for you. You seem to have mistaken yourself for someone who matters. Maybe if you were a CEO and could dangle a promotion in front of me for sucking your dick. Maybe if you were my boss and I had kids and couldn't really take the risk of suing your ass for incessantly making off-color remarks about me. Maybe, then, I'd sit here and take it.

"However, you are a fat loser gamer-kin. You sweat too much and you smell funny. You're on a reality show about the shittiest genre of video games. You have nothing to offer that would give me any incentive at all to take this crap from you for one second.

"Bad gamma male. No! Say one more thing to me, ONE. MORE. THING, and I'm going to go right over there and claw your moist weak eyes right out of your fat-covered oily pimply head."

I have all the answers.

Hooker - 2012-03-01

If you watch the exit interview a producer did with her after she voluntarially left the show (I think?), it's pretty clear that she was extremely uncomfortable by this bullshit. I imagine she thought it was safer for all involved to endure this and play along as best she could than create a confrontation.

pastorofmuppets - 2012-03-01

I'd imagine that when you are on a reality show, not making a stink about things is the best revenge.

Corpus Delectable - 2012-03-01

I don't mean to imply she acted incorrectly. Obviously, it was an awful situation. I was more trying to point to the pathetic nature of the harasser.

In a dark sort of way, it's kind of funny. Like he needs to do *more* to drive off women?

That said, I'd have paid money to see her turn on his insecurities, the ones that he salves by behaving this way.

badideasinaction - 2012-03-01

I suspect part of it was knowing that the show wasn't going to do jack shit to take her side. They had seen it so far and hadn't done anything about it. My guess is the forfeit was basically a "fuck you" to the show, and knowing that it would garner enough negative publicity that maybe someone in charge would do something about it.

Riskbreaker - 2012-03-01

Can somebody give the tl:dw version of this? I can't stand fighting game nerds and their narrations/comentaries. Also, if this was bad, the reaction in the fighting gamer community is exactly what you are thinking, if not worse. TFL all over the place.

Sudan no1 - 2012-03-01

The beardo behind the camera zooms up on her chest and feet, calls her "insubordinate" when she refuses to stand up for him and tries to hide her feet. I only watched half the video, but it was more than enough.

Craptabulous - 2012-03-01

It's basically a commentator with the mentality of someone from 4chan. He's misogynistic and disgusting while she tries to play it off as a joke, he even goes as far to suggest she smell the seat he was occupying and to mention her breast size to the chat watching the stream. It's very foul, and I pity this girl and everyone in the room.

I have an idea to get a gay man to do this to him. Neckbeards can't stand gay people.

NewHeavenSalesman - 2012-03-01

The only part missing is that on one of the final days, she forfeited during the elimination match she was placed in. This led to alot of nerd anger because she apparently screwed over one of the other players for the 25k prize. A couple of more famous players (including the other girl on the show) posted on twitter to the effect of WELL SHE MIGHT HAVE FELT BAD BUT IF SHE HAD ASKED ARIS TO STOP HMMMM.

The playerbase (those that actually matter, not the endless online warrior garbagedome that is SRK) seem to be split between those disgusted with Aris, those recognizing something wrong but uncomfortable with calling out people so just making jokes, and people who seems genuinely convinced that sexual harassment makes the FGC better than esports.

Void 71 - 2012-03-01

Online warrior garbagedom? When did playing games online become more pathetic than sitting in a room full of people like this?

Jericho - 2012-03-01

Rea: Can I get my Street Fighter without sexual harassment?

Bakhtanians: You can’t. You can’t because they’re one and the same thing. This is a community that’s, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community--it’s StarCraft. There’s nothing wrong with StarCraft if you enjoy it, and there’s nothing wrong with anything about eSports, but why would you want just one flavor of ice cream, you know? There’s eSports for people who like eSports, and there’s fighting games for people who like spicy food and like to have fun. There’s no reason to turn them into the same thing, you know?

jyrque - 2012-03-01

Wow.

SolRo - 2012-03-01

You left out the best part;

“The sexual harassment is part of the culture. If you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community… it doesn’t make sense to have that attitude. These things have been established for years,” Aris stated. He then noted that ... it’s unfair for anyone to tell fighting game fans they can’t viciously mock women.

“That’s what you’re trying to do to the fighting game community and it’s not right,” Aris continued. “It’s ethically wrong.”

boner - 2012-03-01

This community means as much to me as a festering bowl of dog snot

LetsFistAgain - 2012-03-01

"Professional" fighting game players are pretty horrible people.

Bootymarch - 2012-03-01

They're just about all fucking assholes. That's why its awesome when you kick their asses in front of hundreds of people.

eatenmyeyes - 2012-03-01

Most of the ones I know personally are pretty cool.

LetsFistAgain - 2012-03-01

I was exaggerating of course. I dont think Daigo would act like this, for example.

Udderdude - 2012-03-01

My two cents is that the FGC really needs to start acting more mature, because the more mainstream exposure it gets, the more disgusting shit like this is going to stand out like a sore thumb.

FGC may have started as a bunch of high-school dropout misanthropes in a dark, smelly arcade devoid of anything remotely resembling a female, but it's about time they left that behind.

There's no way they can keep clinging to the attitude that crap is "Part of the culture" and continue to grow. It is not "Keeping it real", it's just disgusting.

I will add that most of the really odious offenders are on the East Coast, where things never really progessed much, while the West Coast has seemingly grown much farther with a better attitude and more down to earth commentators like James Chen and Ultradavid.

Udderdude - 2012-03-01

Also from what I've seen of Street Fighter X Tekken, it's a fucking joke.

NewHeavenSalesman - 2012-03-01

Agreed. For a community of people that claim to be rough badasses in contrast to those Starcraft wimps, they're remarkably thin-skinned when people call them out on shit like this.

There was a hilariously dumb editorial on SRK that basically came down to "stop talking about bad stuff, HYPE ALL THAT MATTERS," and spent more time talking about the fake Jago vs Mike Ross rivalry than the fact that a dude spent multiple days sexually harassing a woman live on stream. That is basically FGC in a nutshell right now.

Riskbreaker - 2012-03-01

Funny thing is how these guys pride themselves of being super smug and what not, but they go and buy the same game capcom keeps throwing at them for the past 4 years. I mean, this is basically Street Fighter IV with new skins, but don't even dare telling them cuz you will be blasted to the moon and back for being a "noob".

spikestoyiu - 2012-03-01

Do they think they're badasses because they're fake fighting?

sosage - 2012-03-01

I wanted to stay out of this, at POETV of all places:

1) This incident is embarrassing and destroys point 3 for 99% of the people outside the FGC watching it. I'm personally embarrassed by it. I know almost everyone involved and it's just a fucking mess. I feel horrible that this happened to her.

2) It's typically the other communities bah'ing over the FGC telling them to stfu, that the FGC isn't interested in your community and especially aren't into being leeched off of by these other entities which have attempted to con cash out of the FGC before.

3) The majority of the people that run events are college graduates with successful careers, good social lives and healthy families. We aren't high school drop outs and mouth breathing shit heads.

4) It's not the same game.

5) I've got POETV cat videos to watch.

Void 71 - 2012-03-01

Shouldn't you be closing threads on Shoryuken right now?

Coax_Current - 2012-03-01

If any of you are in the FGC, at least the American one, do yourself a favor and leave. You'll never regret it. If you're an adult, you're past due.

It's always been shit and it probably always will be shit. I don't know exactly why it's always been so bad. The competitive aura particular to FGs, the imma-alpha-umad attitude, the general lack of education... not sure what the essential factors are, but it's depressing. The nice, the good, the smart, all leave.

Maybe it's improved some in the last decade, but from what little I follow it doesn't look like it. I was surprised to see Aris back in the limelight, but maybe I shouldn't be.

Void 71 - 2012-03-01

Everything about the modern fighting game community is disgusting. Aris is just the tip of a massive shit iceberg.

spikestoyiu - 2012-03-01

Gamers: smashing stereotypes.

Nikon - 2012-03-01

I am disgusted and appalled.

chumbucket - 2012-03-01

What an annoying fuck.

Riskbreaker - 2012-03-01

doesn't change the fact the men are genetically superior to woman, physically. whens the last time you heard a grown woman rape a grown man? im not gonna google it but im sure theres been hardly any cases of that. but vice versa its totally different. maybe she was scared to say something, maybe she was hoping someone would say something about it. you never know. im just saying, if it was me in there, that would have stopped.

holy fuck

http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/a-litany-of-hate- in-defense-of-the-fgc.155488

I think I'm gonna take a hiatus from fighting games guys

Crackersmack - 2012-03-01

This was gross. Why do people still play fighting games? Why didn't anybody tell the creepy guy to cut it out? What kind of people are these?

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2012-03-01

The kind who think that one's value as a human being is determined by their skill in playing video games.

Nikon - 2012-04-01

To put a Lauren Faust spin on it: Fighting games are fun. If you can play the games with other grownups, they can be a lot of fun. If you play with jerks, it's not very fun at all.

CornOnTheCabre - 2012-03-01

Man, I really feel bad for that girl. Not just for the standard dehumanizing reasons, but because she had to realize, at that exact moment, that yes -- everyone who ever doubted her was right -- she was indeed playing video games with obnoxious children for a living.

takewithfood - 2012-03-02

How many other people were in that room and not a single one of them said or did a single thing?
