Menudo con queso - 2012-03-08

Come try that shit in Bed-Stuy. Please.

Riskbreaker - 2012-03-08

Not offensive as just shitty, then again, it's k-pop.

misterbuns - 2012-03-08

KKK-pop

heyitslozeau - 2012-03-08

for evil, and misterbuns.

Chalkdust - 2012-03-08

The full(er) story, based on my crash course reading on the matter: in 2003, this group of singers was basically told by their management agency that they were too fat/ugly to make it as k-pop idols, despite their singing abilities, and it was suggested they adopt the blackface gimmick. Since they are clearly inspired by soul singers, it was interpreted by them as a (horribly ignorant and misguided) tribute, but the outcry was immediate. South Korea has all manner of racial perception issues, and really, the proper response to ignorance is education, not outright condemnation.

So, a three-year hiatus and roster change of two members later, they re-debuted in '06 looking like normal South Koreans, and even going against the grain of the twiggy-thin babyfaced idols still so prevalent in east Asian entertainment. They've even maintained modest success since the image change, and are still active.

Here's what they look like lately: http://www.generasia.com/w/images/a/a1/Bubble_Sisters.jpg

Well that answers my questions (see below). Damn simultaneous posting.

misterbuns - 2012-03-08

Given that Everything Is Online, ignorance, especially about public image, especially about the culture you're claiming to be influenced by is about as gross as Real Racism.

Chalkdust - 2012-03-08

Well, I look at the exposure Americans have to a culture like, say, Japan based solely on online sources, and the perspective that shapes. Is it any wonder, then, that a country over there looking at a subset of American culture based only on online sources would have a fucked-up perspective?

I'm certainly not saying it's excusable that it happened in the first place, especially since these artists were signed to a major international label (Universal specifically), just trying to provide a bit of clarity.

misterbuns - 2012-03-08

True. Prussian Blue they are not.

misterbuns - 2012-03-08

candyheadrobot - 2012-03-08

then again, weeaboos pretty much do the same thing, sans painting their face...

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2012-03-08

They seem fond of American cheeseburgers.

Bort - 2012-03-08

I'd almost certainly consider this racist if it happened in the US. But I don't know these folks' intentions, and I don't know if they realize they've crossed the line for what's acceptable in the US. So I am loathe to call them racists without knowing more, but whatever they are, I wish they'd stop.

Chancho - 2012-03-08

I didn't know dog meat was so fattening.

boggy84 - 2012-03-09

haha lol koreans eat dog meat! isn't that totally fucked up!! what a shitty backwards culture, they should just murder dogs and incinerate their bodies/throw them in the landfill like a civilized society.

Disaster - 2012-03-08

Without the video, this sounds like it could be a song from Katamari Damacy. They're all really good singers and none of them are ugly in my opinion, it's a shame they couldn't make it without a gimmick.

klingerbgoode - 2012-03-08

Yeah, I kinda like the song itself, actually.

StanleyPain - 2012-03-08

Wow it does put you in mind of Katamari when you don't watch the video.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-03-09

Ignoring the ridiculous blackface thing, they're actually really talented.

I laughed at the hair curlers.
