He's the parent of a kid with autism, he obviously understands how a teacher of autistic children should act, he goes through these problems everyday he takes care of his son. Further, he has the expectation that they won't be abusive to his or any of the other children. And even though you, and even I, cannot handle a child screaming for 2 hours at a restaurant, we still would not verbally abuse a child if we were in this sort of teaching situation. People in these situations also tend to be people that can handle it.

These women completely lack conscience.

Those women knew perfectly well what working with autistic children entails.

Autism has a wide range, so the behavior is not relative to a single set of behaviors. I happen to work at a school where there are a few autistic kids. They bring them in once a week so they can feel like they are part of the regular English class. They aren't expected to perform at the same level. They are really sweet kids, and there is a special ed teacher present whenever they are there.

I can't even begin to say the number of things I felt listening to this, but overwhelming disgust pretty much covers it. I do not support teachers unions and I completely support Students First headed by Michelle Rhee. Teachers like this need to be barred from education and not just recycled. It's revolting. Fuck the teachers unions. And I say that as someone that supports all other unions.

Also: I wouldn't talk to a DOG the way those women talked to special needs children.

How did this turn into something against all teachers' unions and in support of Michelle fucking Rhee? If you're going to support "other unions", that should include teachers' unions. Have some respect for your own working conditions. Two bad apples in this video do not ruin the bunch.

He clearly says that they antagonize the children. His son is obviously really upset by them. Also, there's a huge spectrum of autism and it's terrible to pretend that they don't understand. These are clearly terrible teachers.

The father seems to think that his son, and presumably the rest, don't really understand what's being said, at least regarding the wine drinking from the night before and being called a bastard. The child becoming upset seems to stem from the angry tone of voice.

But yeah, bad teacher. If the dad didn't come across as such a melodramatic cunt, I wouldn't have bothered typing anything.

It's fair enough to say that the teacher's have a shitty job, but that's no excuse for them to yell at 10 year olds to shut up. No one is forcing them to work there. Just find a new job and let someone who enjoys it (as many amazing Special Ed teachers do) do the job instead.

Basically this. While we can say that he is overreacting, I think it is a fair response to expect a certain degree of professionalism from teachers that was sorely lacking. The comments some of these teachers made were out of line and mean-spirited for anyone working with children. Getting angry and installing discipline is one thing. Going out of your way to be outright mean to a little kid is another.

Also the fact that they outright lied about the incident. "Shut your mouth" I actually don't think is the worst thing you can say to a child, but if it is against the policy and they lied about breaking it, because they knew it would have negative ramifications, then that's not kosher.

I don't have any kids, but if I did have a ten year old child and someone called him a bastard knowing he couldn't talk to me about it and then lied to me about it, I imagine I would be pretty pissed.

A teacher wasn't fired after:

* Coming in with a hangover
* Cursing at special needs kids
* Telling a child he would not see his father again
* Yelling at children with special needs who were crying
* Mocking them while doing so

I've only been teaching for two months, so I'm not a complete expert on teaching, but for fuck's sake, none of this is acceptable. This guy's reaction is if anything, really controlled given the circumstances. He has every right to be outraged. The system has failed him. It needs to be rectified. He made it public and I fucking applaud him for it.

Verbal abuse is still abuse. I can't imagine what it must have been like for a child with autism to be in an environment with a hostile adult present for who knows how many months.

Yes, yes it was horrible, and yes it was abuse.

Now I feel like I should name my future son Axelay.
