A little bit of helicopter parenting going on here, especially since he doesn't consider how difficult it would be to teach 10 year-old autistic boys on a daily basis. However I gotta agree with the dad here - an apology to his kid and the rest of those kids is in order. Special-needs teaching must just suck, ya can't win. I can barely stand a screaming kid on a plane or in a restaurant for 2 hours, let alone every day. Insanity surely would ensue.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-04-25 Also: I wouldn't talk to a DOG the way those women talked to special needs children.

Playing devil's advocate here, but if the kids don't understand what you're saying, how does it hurt them? The dad seems pretty upset about calling him a bastard. The kid wasn't humiliated or abused by the words.
The lady shouldn't be teaching, but I don't think she's some sort of evil monster for spending 8 hours a day with autistic children with behavioral problems and heaven forbid, sometimes showing how godawful that job must be.
And, oh, heavens, she drank the night before. KILL THE BITCH. If

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-04-24 He clearly says that they antagonize the children. His son is obviously really upset by them. Also, there's a huge spectrum of autism and it's terrible to pretend that they don't understand. These are clearly terrible teachers.
|
CIWB - 2012-04-25 The father seems to think that his son, and presumably the rest, don't really understand what's being said, at least regarding the wine drinking from the night before and being called a bastard. The child becoming upset seems to stem from the angry tone of voice.
But yeah, bad teacher. If the dad didn't come across as such a melodramatic cunt, I wouldn't have bothered typing anything.

Another devil's advocate, in that I have a friend with an autistic kid. They pulled their kid out of school and are getting some state-sponsored assistance (irony: My friend is a die-hard GOPer who wants to cut most federal assistance, except for the stuff for autistic kids, because, well, he's a hypocrite) because they wouldn't allow their son to be disciplined like the other kids in the special-needs class he was in. Their techniques involved isolation if a child got out of control, and that was something my friend and his wife demanded they not do, which meant their kid could go berserk without any checks on his behavior, pretty much.
This is where I note that my friend and his wife aren't very good parents. An autistic child is still a child, and if you don't instill discipline because you feel bad doing it or because you think they're fragile, they'll take advantage just like any other kid and try to pull shit.
So I'd like some candid recordings of this dude's child in his home environment before going nuts on the teachers, whose job royally sucks to begin with.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-04-24 It's fair enough to say that the teacher's have a shitty job, but that's no excuse for them to yell at 10 year olds to shut up. No one is forcing them to work there. Just find a new job and let someone who enjoys it (as many amazing Special Ed teachers do) do the job instead.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2012-04-25 Also the fact that they outright lied about the incident. "Shut your mouth" I actually don't think is the worst thing you can say to a child, but if it is against the policy and they lied about breaking it, because they knew it would have negative ramifications, then that's not kosher.

This guy is a wanker. Don't get me wrong. The teacher was inappropriate, and deserved to be fired. The other teachers that got reprimanded deserved to be reprimanded, but this guy is way too angry after the fact. What's the point of making this video? Ultimately to stroke his own ego. The child is fine, the audio presented doesn't exactly portray the "disgusting, vile" "humiliating torment" as advertised. The teacher is rude and totally inept at teaching, but that's it.
I understand he's probably trying really hard to get his point across, but the embellishment is too much. If I listened to an edited version of this clip without audio or reference to audio I would have thought the damn kid was beaten and sodomized.

Jericho - 2012-04-25 I don't have any kids, but if I did have a ten year old child and someone called him a bastard knowing he couldn't talk to me about it and then lied to me about it, I imagine I would be pretty pissed.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-04-25 A teacher wasn't fired after:
* Coming in with a hangover
* Cursing at special needs kids
* Telling a child he would not see his father again
* Yelling at children with special needs who were crying
* Mocking them while doing so
I've only been teaching for two months, so I'm not a complete expert on teaching, but for fuck's sake, none of this is acceptable. This guy's reaction is if anything, really controlled given the circumstances. He has every right to be outraged. The system has failed him. It needs to be rectified. He made it public and I fucking applaud him for it.

As someone who spent five years working for a suburban school district... some teachers are right assholes.

Years ago I might have trolled this video and said that those teachers were really cool, and that his son seemed like a fuckin retard. I've really grown up.

As a teacher, I'm sad these teachers got transferred instead of fired.
That being said this stuff is hardly "horrible, disgusting abuse"
|
Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-04-25 Verbal abuse is still abuse. I can't imagine what it must have been like for a child with autism to be in an environment with a hostile adult present for who knows how many months.
Yes, yes it was horrible, and yes it was abuse.

This guy may have been a bit overly poetic in his anger, but he really is being a class act here. Didn't even reveal the last names, not filing a suit. All things considered, I don't find any fault in this guy and as a teacher it makes me sad that those among us that need to be the most patient and understanding are sometimes the least.
