Five for evil. If someone wants to major in it, the college will offer it. No matter how against the student's own best interests it is.

Where was his fucking guidance counselor or faculty adviser? Someone to slap the sense into him? NYU for a SOCIAL WORK DEGREE? Seriously, this kid was done a disservice.

He would have been a thousand times better off earning a degree in social work at a community college. Same employability, at a quarter of the price. He says mom and dad saved 30k for his education; His parents could have given him a full ride, freshman to senior, and he would have graduated debt-free.

But I guess we all know what they say about hindsight.

When I was choosing a college, my parents told me they were happy I was going, but I wasn't taking out any loans to do it. I could earn scholarships, I could live at home and go part-time/work-part time, and I could do work study, but I couldn't borrow money, end of discussion. At the time, I didn't understand their rigidity. Now, I'm grateful for it.

@ Enjoy: Because if the government would loan me money at 0%, and I could loan it to this kid at 8%, and the loan couldn't be discharged in bankruptcy, and I could dragoon the government into being my collection agency, I'd stand to make an absolute assload of money. It's not complicated. Being rich is easy. It's coming out of the right vagina that's the tricky part.

Oscar - bingo. This is why predatory lending is done, because the profit margins are insane and the person in debt will likely never pay the loan off in the next 30 years.

Keep the guy in debt, take the interest payments, and keep the guy clueless, and you'll make a boatload of money. Get the government to back you up and bail you out, and you'll never lose.

Predatory lending is engaged in by two groups: banks and organized crime. The only relevant difference between the two is that when organized crime takes your business, home, and assets, they leave you alone.

Damn. I was typing up a kudos for the use of dragoon and you beat me to it.

I liked the way Oscar used dragoon... It was very creative. At once he was implying both dragging and harpooning government officials, but also implying a sophisticated military tactic. Dragoons were traditionally composed of the gentry and the upper classes.

Then again it could also just be a straightforward traditional use of the word as a verb, which is to subjugate or compel by violence or threats. I prefer the former.
