If what I've read is anything to go buy, this is a hard-currency store where prices are tagged to Euros/Dollars instead of the North Korean Won, which is worth practically nothing. So basically elites, foreigners and anyone lucky enough to work at a tourist attraction that brings in hard currency.

I may be mistaken but isn't it also illegal for the people of North Korea (not counting foreigners or people of high positions) to own dollars?

I'm kind of amazed North Korea hasn't become the world's largest sweatshop by now. I mean, if they're willing to do apparently pointless tasks for their Great Leader, surely some country would give the dictatorship a load of cash for a 24/7 workforce of disposable slaves.

South Korea has thought of this. There was a report a while back that a United Korea would surpass Japan as an economic power, with one of the advantages being the cheap labor supply in the north.

"United Korea" would obviously have different labor laws in the south, of course...

Never underestimate the human ability to do things contrary to their best possible option.

China *does* utilize North Korean slave labor. Their own supply of slave labor has been getting too uppity lately.

North Korean government officials also utilized land that could have been used to grown food (in a country that has recurrent issues with famine) to grow opium poppies, thus ensuring the starvation of thousands.

That place looked like a thrift store to me.
