I remember watching this in the summer of 1980. I was living in an old farmhouse in Pennsylvainia, a sort of a hippie commune. There was no running water, and I'd stay inside heating water with a woodstove to wash the dishes while everybody else worked the fields. i didn't like the sun. Luckily, there was elecricity, and a tv.
The Letterman daytime show was just amazingly weird. I remember the last show after the unsurprising cancellation. They used showgirls and Tchaikovsky to create an aura of fake class. It was hilarious.
I know a lot of people who really dislike steve martin. I will never understand them. I think it's mostly european friends or people who only know him from cheaper by the dozen etc.
