The woman is angry about budget cuts to the police and fire departments. Her husband was the fire chief, suggesting that WOAH RACISM.

The racial slur plus the quick shoot down from the press is a pretty quick encapsulation of how racism works down here. Old connected or just plain connected white people circle the wagons for each other. You gotta keep the poor whites and the poor blacks and the poor Latinos from realizing they have overwhelming common interests.

In Jackson, MS, there's a black couple whose own church refused to marry them on the premises because they were black. And yes, it's a predominantly white Baptist church. I don't know how they'd react to an interracial couple.

I'm not trying to defend anyone in this clip, but from the description and comments I expected a lot worse. This is just a single stupid cow getting worked up and spouting off a single racist phrase, off camera, after the meeting had been adjourned.

And let's not accuse the guy reporting on the meeting for the newspaper of being a 'good ol' boy' covering the tracks of some huge white supremacist conspiracy. The meeting was over. 90% of the people were gone. Do you really expect him to open his book and write:

"-Edit: A few minutes after the meeting Sharlena called Duayne a god damn nigger."

And then report what on that exactly? That one of the attendants at a city hall meeting said the n-word? And if he did decide to run that 'story', would he really need to write it down to remember it?

The only press coverage is a video uploaded to youtube by some guy at thefount.org, and an article at that website, which is terrible I might add. Again, I'm not disagreeing with the content, just the fact that it's a terrible article and the website itself is a joke.

It wasn't just a woman, it was the wife of the fire chief. It wasn't an isolated case, another government worker reported a similar outburst months earlier but there was no camera to record it.

I'm not sure what this video would have taken to make you like it more. If three white people said nigger would you have given it two more stars?

No, it was just a single woman and a single phrase. I don't care about what the video doesn't show. I also don't care if she's the fire chief's wife.

From the description I expected to see racial slurs flying high, I had assumed, during a city hall meeting. Video did not deliver. Three stars.
