At first they are bored and dismissive, then viscerally disgusted, and finally all enthralled in morbid fascination. So Cosby is to the Cosby's what reality television is for us. Which makes sense, because it's their reality.

America used to love this show. Today it wouldn't survive a single episode. The kids were really a lot more annoying than I remember. But then Theo went on to make Jeremiah, which was one of the best but ignored scifi series of the past decade and a half. So I can't hate him.
Simpler times, no internet, not many video games out there, less movies. Less competition in general.
